I have been using AVG anti-virus (release 6.0.637) for some time and I frequently update my virus definitions. However the release date shows 3/30/2004 even though I have updated several times since then. When I run it I get the message "Your AVG virus database is out-of-date...blah, blah, blah" so I update. But the release date has never changed from 3/30/2004. Is this a flaw in the software? Has Grisoft stopped updating the virus definitions? Have any other AVG users experienced this?

You may want to uninstall and reinstall the Program. (First try updating at their site)
I have a program version 6.0.690 and they have been very good about updates.
The latest virus database as of this moment is: 451 (Released 5/22/04).
And actually, I'm expecting one any day now....it doesn't usually take long for a new one.
You might try going to the site and manually downloading the latest program and updates.
Also, be sure your system clock is set properly as I have seen this cause problems.
Bottom line, if your program version is lower than 690 and Virus database lower than 451, you are way out of date! (And most likely quite vulnerable so the sooner you correct this the better).
You can check out what you have by clicking on the "information" tab within the program. (As you probably know)
Try Here (http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_updt6.php?lng=fe)
Select the update that will correspond to your present version and attempt an update.
(If no go, then uninstall and start over would be my suggestion).
(Edit) If you do start from scratch, be sure to write down your activation key from the Info screen before uninstalling. (You can use the same key after reinstalling the program)

I like Avast (it's free) much better than AVG (IMO). The program and virus definition updates with Avast are automatic:

Funny you should mention that Flick!
I actually love Avast...In fact, I installed it on all three of my Computers.
However...(There's always a "however") :p , I find that it is a bit more demanding of System resourses....Still a bit of a Memory Hog. (That was it's reputation in the "old days". In particular, the "Resident Shield").
And while the Auto updates are super and often, (Complete with the automated voice informing you that you've been updated), it just seemed at times that little ball spinning round and round in my system tray was slowing things down and at times driving me crazy.
I do realize it is very customizable, and you can shut some of that stuff off though.....and some of the "skins" are way cool!!!
I did however decide to go back to AVG on one of my machines while I re-evaluate.
Actually, the main reason I went to Avast was back when nobody could get updates for AVG and I got mad! (They've since ironed that out though, and updates have been no problem whatsoever).
Still, I do like Avast a lot, and would recommend trying it to anyone....check out their forums though- Can't please everybody I guess ;)
Man! I've really got to cut down on the Coffee....bla bla bla. :D
EDIT (Funny the way my demented mind works- there always has to be an edit!)
This thread happened to remind me of a recent PC World article, so for what it's worth, here it is. :p

Well, it's the next morning....I'm Baaaaaak :p
"Just an update" :D
If you do decide to keep AVG, as expected, there was another update this morning.
Once you are completely up to date you should have:
Program Version: 6.0.691
Virus database: 452 (5/26/04)
Again, as Flick mentioned, (and I agreed), "avast" is pretty cool too but more "bloated" IMHO.
Still, maybe worth a shot. (Both programs pass the most recent tests mentioned in the PC World article above).
Good luck.

I uninstalled the previous version of AVG and downloaded and updated the newest version. When I ran it AVG found more of that crused BAGEL virus which I'll have to deal with now. The silver lining is that I had BAGEL before and there's a simple removal tool. Thanks for your help.
