I currently have 2 comps linked with X-over cable at 100Mb and i like to play LAN games, but i want to go wireless, so

Does wireless have any affect in playing online games or/ games on a LAN? I know 54Mbps is fast enough in terms of data transfer, but is there any slow down due to the wireless signal having to travel to the access point and back to the pc? I don't want to mich lag in the games.

Also how reliable are these wireless kits? Both PC's are upstairs in different rooms, and the accesspoint will be downstairs.

And how easy are they to configure?

I use a wireless system at home and at work. The only "Slow-down" I've experienced was when transferring files. There's a big difference in speed. I'm not sure how it would affect your games. If it was a big concern, why not use 802.11g instead of the popular and less expensive 80211.b?

Just a thought, you may want to hang around and maybe someone else that has "gamed" over wireless can answer your question.

Thanks for the reply.

I am going to spend a bit more and go for "g".

Transferring files is not a problem, 54 mbps will do fine.

But im not sure about how games will play so if anyone has experience of playing games wirelessly any advice would be great.

Joe.

My experience with wireless is that it is still a little bit "unstable". Often the connection simply stops responding and the reason can be anything like someone passing near the transmitter with a cell phone or something like that.

I would play with regular old cable and wait more for more stable reliable wireless.

Thanks for the replies,

:( Still not sure what im gonna do.

I think since the x-over cable is already in place, ill keep it there for gameing.

I still think im gonna go wireless for broadband sharing, which im getting on the 11th :D .

So since ill have a wired LAN card and a wireless Lan card in each pc would it be possible to run "2" LANs?

Any other ideas?

Anyone else have experience of playing games wirelessly?

thanks for all advice

I dont play over a LAN, but I do play over the net. I usually easily get around 30ms pingtime over a wireless-B connection, then through the internet. I usually have some of the lowest pings, and not a lot of packetloss. Connection seems just as good as on wire to me.

BTW: I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop that has the Dell TrueMobile 1400 Dual Band WLAN Mini-PCI Card and a Netgear wireless-B access point/router. I'm on Roadrunner cable connection. Hope this helps!
