Hi,
Some games have option to chose any of the above mentioned protocols for Multiplayer gaming on LAN.
Then what should one select ? and why?
Is there any protocol still better than these two?
thnx.

TCP/IP is better because you don't need to have a Novell NetWare server running.

thnx, but let me clarify a bit.

Here, i m on a LAN (in my hostel)
We friends want to play a game.
both TCP/IP and IPX are available options in that game.
The server is available.
(I don;t get PrntRhd what u said Novell Netware server)

Now in this scenario, whats my best choice?

IPX is a Novell protocol.

I replied TCP/IP would be better because it is more of an open standard and therefore more flexible for all users to connect together.
TCP/IP does not require a server-based system but will allow servers to be used if desired.

PRNTRD is wrong on this one. You can run games using either protocol. IT's simply how it transmits the packets, either TCP/IP or IPX/SPX. You do not need a server. I don't think IPX/SPX comes standard with the networking defaults on XP, but I could be wrong. It would be a simple matter of installing it if it doesn't.

In your case IPX/SPX would probably be faster than TCP/IP for a local network. I have used it several times for LAN gaming set ups. Works like a champ.
