View Full Version : Start up problems after adding more RAM

I recently added a 128MB stick of pc133 memory to my system, and now win98 chokes during boot up with the following message: While Initializing device CONFIGMG: Windows Protection Error. You need to restart your computer.
I can ctrl-alt-del and manage to get into windows and the system runs fine. The memory I added is the same brand (Crucial) that I used when I built the system almost two years ago. The only difference between the old memory and the new memory is the new stick is cas2 and the old one is cas3. Could that be causing the problem? I thought about taking out the old stick to see what happens with just the new memory in the system. Any suggestions?

Hello snafu,
Welcome to PC Guide Forums!
Try entering into the BIOS...usually this is accomplished by tapping the DELETE key during boot-up. Don't make any changes just Save & Exit. Hopefully this will help Windows to recognize the added memory.
I'm not sure regarding the differences in latency and what their effect will be if anything. Hopefully one of the Big Kahuna Geeks will stop by and set that issue to rest! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

FYI
FROM CRUCIAL SITE
------------------------------------------------
CL2 parts process data a little quicker than CL3 parts in that you have to wait one less clock cycle for the initial data. However, after the first piece of data is processed, the rest of the data is processed at equal speeds. Latency only affects the initial burst of data. Once data starts flowing, there is no effect. Bear in mind, a clock cycle for a PC100 module is 10 nanoseconds so you probably won't notice a significant performance difference. Most systems will accept either latency part. However, there are some systems that require either CL2 or CL3 parts. These requirements are built into our Memory Selector.
Also, some BIOS allow you to select the CL...if so set it to CL3...it wouldn't matter for the stick that is CL2 but the CL3 stick may be choking if it has been automatically set to CL2....
also checking it with just the new stick is a very good idea.
