First of all, I just setup a router for my two computers through a data network. My modem speed is 256k. I have just uninstalled Zone Alarm Pro as the dude who setup the router said the hardware router has a built in firewall in it, however I just used a program called Firewall leakage tester v1.2 to test the firewall and it said Firewall penetrated, Leakestest was able to connect to the main GRC.COM Web Server! Leaktest was not prevented from connecting to Gibson Research web server. You either have no firewall, you have deliberately allowed Leaktest to connect outbound, or leaktest just slipped past your firewalls outbond protection if any.

Why is this happening if I have a hardware firewall in my router modem??? How do I fix this? Also, I am using the filesharing program Soulseek and seem to be getting slower download speeds than usual. In the help files it says this can be helped or fixed by you can forwarding/opening ports 2234 and 5534 for better client performance. So how do I open ports 2234 and 5534 on my router modem??

Daniel-Man,

The hardware firewall only shields you from the outside (Internet) and only if it turned on. Most come wide open by default.
You can check the hardware firewall settings by entering the gateway address into the web browser.

I use the hardware firewall on my DSL router AND a software firewall (ZA free) on all the inside PCs as I want to know what is being sent out as well as into my PCs. GRC's LeakTest is for testing just that type of traffic.

What model modem/router are you using?

OK. I'm using a Draytek Vigor 2500 ADSL Router SOHO

Comes with NAT firewall and VPN capable, good stuff. You still need a software firewall for outgoing packet control, unless someone knows differently.

Just a blurb about Soulseek application in SWI forums: soulseek spyware? (http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=3883)
