Hello Guys!
I am a newbie here and hope that you may be able to point me in the right direction to solving a problem that my PC has had for quite some time now.
PC is a Athlon 2.4, 80gb hdd, with 1024Ram.
Normally it is connected through a LAN network but the problem still seems to exist even if I dial-up as a stand alone PC.
I am getting download transfer speeds of less than 1bps regardless of where I download from.
Regular maintenance is performed including Disc clean up, defrags, Adaware checks, Spybot as well as a Hijack this scan which showed up 2 problems (related to kazaa! which has now been deleted) and the problems have been taken out of PC,
I am on a dial-up network, receiving about 52kbps from my ISP connection yet when I was advised to do a connection speed test at Tech.msn.com it returned a speed of 1.6
Our other 2 computers returned 35-39 on the same test and they both handle downloading at transfer of 5kbps consistently.
When R/Clicking on Connection TV Icon (Bottom right of screen) and checking status of connection, does a very small sent & recieved figure (200-700) have anything to do with this as the host computer is getting 8-9 million at the same time?
When I am surfing or working off-line the speed is fantastic! This only appears to affect downloading and usually if the download is bigger than 300 kbs my machine will end up losing it's connection to the download server.
I hope that I have included enough info here but if not will be happy to give more.
Oh! There is still about77% free space on the PC! and it is 1 year old.
Thank you for listening Guys and I hope that you can be of assistance to me......... James:)

well, james, the first thing I would do is buy a new modem. Since all the other PCs hooked up to the connection are doing fine, its gotta have something to do with the hardware. if you dont feel like purchacing a modem right away, you could just exchange it with another modem in one of the other PCs.

Welcome Aboard!
You say that this problem STILL occurs if you use dial up. Does this mean that you get slow connections from your other connection methods?
If you connect to a LAN and download something from another PC, is the transfer slow?
If so, then it is likely that there is something running that is slowing things down.
Are your connections done through USB?

Probably the first port of call is to check all security again - I know you've said you regularly run Hijack this etc, but it may well be worth running it again and posting a log here. You don't say if you run AV software - do you use an up to date AV package?

Give us a few details on OS, firewalls, AV, connection methods (USB modem etc) so we can help point you in the right direction.

To answer the other questions,
I thought that the modem was only to dial up with, which it does well?

When I speak of using dial-up I mean that the other computers have been disconnected completely and my pc is the only one that the phone line is using. Even in that case the download transer speeds drop to next to nothing yet opening pages on the internet or surfing is very quick.
ISP connection speed is 52 kpbs.
Normally we have the 3 computers networked through a 5 point hub with one of the others as the host computer. Everything is USB.
As I said it does not appear to make any difference to the performance of my PC if it is on the network or not.

I am unsure what you mean by downloading from one of the other pc's but we can copy files with no problems.
AV is Norton 2004 and regular updates.
Firewalls I am not sure of?
Modem is a Internal HSP56 Micromodem. (Device is working properly) So it says lol.
Thanks again for your help guys! .........James

Thank's guys!

I went into Device Manager, Deleted the Modem, Rebooted the PC and the problem seems to be fixed.
Can I say thank you to you all:)
Best wishes ... James
