I recently switched hard drives in two computers. XP would not boot so I did a repair installation. Everything worked fine except for 2 things. 1. The computer when shut down goes to the You may Turn off your computer safely screen and has to be shut down with the power switch instead of power down. 2. I lost standby mode. Any ideas how to correct thes problems? p3 win xp home

Hi,
Kinda sounds like your power management options have been uninstalled or turned off in the bios. Might check that out.

Did you install a harddrive with a configuration for one particular motherboard into another system with a different motherboard and setup??
If so, I'm not sure that doing an XP repair reconfigures the OS for the new rig you put it into...
OS CDs are "generic" until they are installed on a particular system. They pull specific files etc. from the OS CD and thus, the OS that is actually installed becomes "specific," or "configured" for the system it is originally installed on...
Pulling the bootable harddrive from one rig and planting it into another because it "has XP installed" is going to be fraught with problems... :(
It would be kinda like taking a Starship captain from their "vessel" and putting them into an "alien ship" and expecting them to know how to simply fly it...the controls are all different, different hardware...the big red button on the home ship that put the ship on auto-pilot wasn't clearly marked Self-Destruct in the alien ship...

I think you are right. I guess I'm lucky to have only a few problems with this installation. Thanks for the reply.I appreciate it.
