Hello,
In Internet Explorer 6,the scrollable History window on the left is not showing a list of visited web pages, etc. How do I correct this?I'm pretty sure that the history is being recorded, its just not showing here anymore. When I click on the "history" folder subfolders of MSHist012004042820040429 and Index.dat are shown...Any Idea's:confused:

Given today's prolific malware economy, since this has something to do with the web I would run an on line virus scan. www.trendmicro.com would be an excellent choice.
I would then run AdAware and then Spybot Search&Destroy fixing/removing whatever they find...reboot...
Finally, I would run HiJackThis and post the log in this thread...
Links are in my sig...

Your log looks pretty clean, but I would use HJT to fix this item. Close all open windows and your browser before proceeding to use HJT to mark/fix:
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = c:\windows\SYSTEM\blank.htm
The O6 is usually either set by a systems admin to keep people from changing settings on a network computer or by programs like Spybot when you ask them to protect your computer from invaders changing your settings.... Since you are running this, it is likely that you set it yourself:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {53707962-6F74-2D53-2644-206D7942484F} - C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\SDHelper.dll
Reboot and post a fresh log afterwards to see if anything changed....

Your log looks all clear....
Are you still having a problem?? If not, here is my prevention speech:
This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. You need an antivirus that is updated, a good firewall (a router firewall is not enough) and a spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads. All of these have good free versions available... be very cautious about any security software that advertises in popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually useless, but also often have malware in them....

Hi again,
Thanks Budfred for your quick response.I'm still not seeing a history list on the sideI now have 3 backups on my desktop, one being a .dll .They say "backup" followed by a long series of numbers.
Can I delete these?

The files on your Desktop are from HJT and are there because you are running HJT fromt he Desktop. It might be a good idea to set up a folder like C:\HJT and put HJT and the backups into it... I would hold onto them for about 2 weeks and if you don't have any new problems, delete them.
I will leave the question of what is going on with IE to others... good luck...

I'm still having this problem with "history" in Internet Explorer. One thing I did notice is that the index dat. file properties says IE5 in the description.I know I'am running IE6.Any idea's or should I re-install Internet Explorer
I downloaded a program called "history view" which does show all history and works properly.

You can try a reinstall and see if that does it... You could also try an update and see if there is anything new... You may have an option for a IE Repair in your IE, so you could try that if you have it... Others may know more about IE... I generally only use it if I have to... :)

Under temporary internet files there is a normal folder called content.ie5 (http://www.google.com/search?q=content.ie5) which is the normal name for the folder (usually hidden) even under ie6
