-please forgive any stupidness on my part, for I am but a lowly newb.-

I downloaded Ad-Aware and ran it. It seems to have cleaned out most of the gunk, but I'm still having problems. An error message keeps popping up that says bridge.dll is missing. I'm assuming from the other posts that I should post a Highjack This logfile, so here it is.

Any help would be much appreciated!

WAIT FOR BUDFRED OR STEVE TO CONFIRM MY SUGGESTIONS BEFORE PROCEEDING

First I would download CWShredder (http://209.133.47.12/~merijn/files/CWShredder.exe)

Run the program and allow it to fix what it finds

Second, copy HJT to a known folder. By placing it in the temp folder, it MAY be harder to restore any backups.

Run HJT and fix the following:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\sifrel.exe
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://websearch.drsnsrch.com/sidesearch.cgi?id=
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://websearch.drsnsrch.com/sidesearch.cgi?id=

That beinf siad, you need to run windows update apply all critical updates.
Download, install and update spyware blaster
Download, install, update and scan with adaware and spybot.

HJT can't fixing Running Processes, so this has to be deleted manually:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\sifrel.exe

And this seems to be accidental.. it doesn't need to be fixed:

Explorer\PLUGINS\npqtplugin2.dll

This needs to be added to the fixes:

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {2CDE1A7D-A478-4291-BF31-E1B4C16F92EB} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe

Then it would probably work best to boot into Safe Mode and remove these. With ViewMgr in Add/Remove Programs and the other one can simply be found and deleted...

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\sifrel.exe

And as classicsoftware said, you really need to update WinXP and IE or you will be vulnerable to any number of nasty worms and other parasites....

Glad to hear things are working better, but if you don't want a nasty surprise showing up later, it would be a good idea to post a fresh HJT log so we can make sure we got it all. Some things show up after other things are fixed, so we need to be sure...

I downloaded Spybot and ran it, just to be safe. There's something called DSO Exploit that keeps coming back, no matter how many times I delete it. Do you guys have any idea what it is?

Budfred
06-09-2004, 12:02 AM
Your log looks clean... congrats...:)

The DSO Exploit warning seems to be a glitch in Spybot, but you can read more about it on their website...

This is the time for my prevention speech so you don't end up in trouble again:

This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. You need an antivirus that is updated, a good firewall (a router firewall is not enough) and a spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads. All of these have good free versions available... be very cautious about any security software that advertises in popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually useless, but also often have malware in them....

Check out this article for more ideas:
