Can (or more appropritely how)can a usb be used between a laptop and a desktop PC for "briefcase file sharing" and updating. Connectivity is the issue here- I dig the updating thing. Both Dells, already have a wireless connection through brouter (both share DSL) or is the connectivity already there and I just need to "share" a folder?

You are already connected by a wireless LAN. Simply changing the settings will allow you to share files. Please list your operating system.
1) File and printer sharing needs to be enabled (probably already done).
2) Each computer on your network needs to have the same workgroup name.
3) Each computer needs a unique network ID.
4) Drives or folders that you want to share must be marked as shared (right click on the drive or folder in My Computer, click on Properties, then change the sharing property to shared - full or read only).

Both are win XP pro, I can check settings on the IDs of them- I have not yet done so.I have also not set up file sharing on either yet but will do and try. If the wireless DSL adaptor does not create a link can it be done through USB?

Unlike Firewire (http://www.homenethelp.com/network/firewire.asp) WinXP wont, AFAIK, be able to connect using USB without the two PCs connecting through such as a USB Ethernet Adapter (http://www.wown.com/j_helmig/usbmain.htm)
