Hey all,

My PC went into a mode last night (after going into suspend)where the HD LED was constantly on and wouldn't "wake up". So I shut down, disconnected power, repowered and then turned it on. The HD LED comes on (steady) and there is no signal to the monitor. That is all that happens. No beeps, nothing else.....any ideas?

Any fans running, hear any activity from the hard drive?
If not, then suspect the power supply module. You can check its leads with a voltmeter. They should read as follows:
Yellow-Black: 12V
Red-Black: 5V
Orange-Black: 3.3V
White-Black: -5V
Blue-Black: -12V

If the PS fan is running and its voltage readings are ok, then it's either a bad MB or CPU. Swapping out is really the only way to know which one has failed.

Hello brianZ,

What OS are you using? Also, any chance that you were on line when the system went into suspend?

Well,

All is o.k. with the PS. I am using win98SE, and I wasn't online when this happened. My guess is that this is probably the MOBO, but it could be the CPU...unfortunately I really have no way to tell unless anyone knows a way to test either (that is inexpensive http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif ). Thanks for your input thus far, have a great holiday.

It seems strange that the problem appeared following a suspend. I would search the Microsoft Knowledge Base (http://www.microsoft.com) under Win98 and suspend and see if there are any known issues.

Yoda is great with links for this sort of thing...hopefully he's not on Christmas Vacation already! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

Disconnect the PC power source from the wall and then remove a side cover. Make sure everything is plugged in properly and things look kosher.
Look to see if anything has unplugged itself, etc.

Have you had any problems lately with BSOD or things just coming to a freeze? Or error messages that have caused you to re-boot? How 'bout booting up lately?

The HDD LED being on steady is not good. Can you hear the HDD try to spin up when you power up?

Luck.
