I have been asked to network 2 pc's on a single cable line, Of course not to sound like a novice I said sure no problem that would be easy. I then got a feeling that if it was that easy the local cable ISP wouldn't be charging extra to set it up. What are my options ? I have seen a few posts that say set up router or can I go wireless, How do I get pst have only one IP address given from ISP, I am trying to save this person some money. If you have some helpful links please post or at least a starting point to give me some idea how much time and money this will costs, thanks for the help

Well, a router allows you to connect both PCs in a LAN (local network) sharing the cable connection (WAN) single IP address.
You get network interface cards for both PCs, this allows you to connect to the router using relatively cheap Category 5 twisted-pair cables. The router will assign LAN addresses using DHCP for each PC.

Assuming both PC's are in proximity and both have betwork cards. This is a 15 minute job. Ok 30 minutes of your a novice. This assumes a 10 base-t cable modem and not a USB modem.
You have now 1 cable modem and one patch cable connectin the modem to the network card.
You will need a Linksys 4 port Router (http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?grid=34&scid=29&prid=561)
You will also need to buy one patch cable as one will be provided with the router.
Here goes.
1) Power off PC's
2) Power off Cable Modem
3) Unplug patch cable from back of PC and plug it into the WAN port on the router
4) Plug one patch cable from the back of each PC to any one of the LAN ports on the back of the router labeled 1-4
5) Turn on the cable modem wait a good 2 minutes.
6) Turn on the router and make sure you have link on the WAN side.
7) Turn on the PC's.
8) When you get to the desktop. Click on IE. Type http://192.168.1.1 and press enter. You should be at the router firmware login. Press tab to get past the user name and the password is admin. You must change the password in the firmware. Exit the firmware after changing the password
9) You should be good to go....... It really is that simple.
