I don't have Windows XP yet, but I will and I'm trying to get all the info I can, and all drivers I'll need, etc. The boot disk thing has been a big question...4 disks? Well, I just saw a boot disk on Bootdisk.com that apparently will do the trick. I downloaded it and checked it on another computer and it looks pretty good. It says Win98, but it's supposed to work. I realize 98 and XP work similarly, so I'm kinda curious. I'm not installing XP 'til after Christmas, so if anyone tries this disk, let me know what happens.

I guess your system will not boot from CD? If it does, you don't need the start-up disks. (For Win2k, anyway)

Another thought.....
If your system is old enough that it won't boot from CD, I wouldn't recommend putting XP on it.
We are seeing info that says XP is more backward compatible(by way of mimicing older OSs) then ME was, but yet so many peripherals are not supported and will not be. This is a clear indication that XP will not play well with anything older then itself. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif
New Rule of Thumb: With newer OSs, if you need to use boot disks, don't install it!

No, it's a Pent. III 550 so I'm sure it'll work. I guess I forgot that it'll boot from the CD. My memory is failing me...45 and sometimes I think like I'm 75.

"...45 and sometimes I think like I'm 75."
Great, gives me something to look forward too (I'm 44.75)! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

You can download a file from MS that unzips onto 6 floppies and allows you to install on non-CD bootable system. But you still need to be able to access your CD drive during setup. Though as has been said there will more thatn likely be a lot of hardware incompatabillities

You don't need a boot disk to install XP just bootup to your normal OS insert the XP CD it will autorun the XP setup program and go from there you can upgrade, clean install, or setup a duelboot. After instalation and XP won't boot on a duel boot system you can run the XP repair console from the bootloader screen asking which OS you want to boot. Be sure to learn the commands and syntax for this program. it is a command line program simular to MSDOS. I think if XP wont boot and it is the only OS it would boot to the repair console or to a command prompt which has different commands and syntax than the repair console (I haven't tried XP on a single boot system). It seems that duelboot is the way to go atleast till they get the bugs out of XP! If no OS is installed you can bootup using any boot disk with CD-ROM support and run setup that way.

You can also run the install/setup from the dos prompt using WINNT.exe with nothing more than Cd-rom support on the floppy boot disk.
Or use Winnt32.exe from windows 9x
These allow you to install a clean or upgrade. You decide during the setup.
it will see and install boot loader for dual boot using this method
