View Full Version : Dail-up Modem always busy
Hi folks,
Just recently my computer (not this computer) started getting a busy signal everytime I try to dail-up. I have checked the phone line with a telephone and it works, the protocols have not changed and it's using everything as it did before. It's a US Robotics 56k.
thanks in advance for your help

These are more meager suggestions than an attempt to solve your problem (but I thought it was worth throwing out, and they certainly won't hurt anything...)
You say you checked the line with a telephone - did you actually dial the ISP from the phone jack you usually plug your 'puter into and promptly here the familiar "ping-pong-beez-buzz" sounds?
Do you instruct DUN to disable call waiting (like with *70,)? Might be worth a try removing it if you do.
Do you have a wireless phone plugged into the same jack, or have you recently plugged a new one in somewhere in the house? They're notorious for interfering with modem and fax machine signals.

Is it dialing the same number as before?
Did you try a different number from your ISP?
Did you call your ISP and see if there are any problems on their end?
It's also possible that the modem is bad, especially if it's a Winmodem.
They are junk, and go bad too often and too soon.
Thanks for the feedback.
[did you actually dial the ISP from the phone jack you usually plug your 'puter into and promptly here the familiar "ping-pong-beez-buzz" sounds?]
Yes I dailed my ISP using the same phone jack and heard the "ping-pong-beez-buzz" sounds.
[Do you have a wireless phone plugged into the same jack, or have you recently plugged a new one in somewhere in the house? ]
No I don't have any wireless phones.
[Is it dialing the same number as before?]
Yes it's dailing the same number and there is no other availble for my area.
[Did you call your ISP and see if there are any problems on their end?]
Yes and they told me it was on my end.
Right click on 'My Computer', click 'Properties', and see if there are any problems with the modem or its COM port in 'Device Manager'.
Also, open 'Modems' in 'Control Panel', click on 'Diagnostics/More Info'. If you do not see a long list of data, then the modem is bad. Replace it.
Also, remove the modem from Dev. Mgr., restart the computer, and let Windows recognize it and reload its drivers.
