I have installed a 56k modem in my fathers computer and although fine and working when installed it will now not detect a dial tone. Can this just be a cable fault or is there something i am missing?

Did you plug the connector into a regular phone and see if it gets a dial tone?

First thing is to check that the cable is plugged in correctly - very easy mistake to make. If someone has 'checked' the connection, it's possible that the connection is incorrect ( I assume that a telephone is also connected to this line, and that the modem has a connection which effectively splits the line)
PrntRhds suggestion is the first port of call - just the modem cable straight into the main telephone socket should test things ok.

Willt welcome to the forums.
I have come across this problem on a couple of occasions when I used an ordinary telephone cable to connect a modem. If you look at the end of the cable (fits into back of modem) and see how many metal strips it has.

If four(4) it is a telephone cable.
If two(2) then this is a modem cable.

At least 80% of time when the problem arose after fitting a modem (internal/external) that did not work this was the cause. You should have recieved the correct cable with the modem (if new). If not you will be able to get one at your nearest PCWorld.

No dial tone is nearly always a faulty connection or cable - though I have also seen it caused when the phone socket is plugged into the socket on a NIC and not the modem at all.
