Try this: Boot-up and tap the F8 key when the first sreen appears. Use the shift arrow keys and select Command Prompt Only. Enter.

At the command prompt type regedit_/restore. _ being a space.

Use the shift arrow keys and select the Registry with an early date and press enter.

This will replace your present Registry with an earlier one that was booted without errors.

Post back with us.

ranchdog,
I may be wrong but is it 'scanreg /restore'?

I have tried the commands as ranchdog has suggested.

>regedit /restore
bad command or file name

Have tried
>regedit
on its own and it returns with:
bad command or file name

What next?

I have located the regedit file to be under C:\Windows

I have tried these commands, note the reported errors are given below:

c:\windows>regedit /restore
Parameter format not correct

c:\windows>regedit
this returns with some command options to use with regedit.
This has very little meaning to me

However I have tried:

c:windows>regedit _restore
Cannot import _restore: Error opening the file.

Please help

the command is scanreg /restore

with a space between scanreg and the / symbol.

however, if you have waited more than 3 to 5 days since this problem began it will not go back any further.

Best bet is to try to restore to the day before the PROBLEM ocurred (no further back) than that.

you may only get one attempt at this.

if that fails then try the scanreg /fix command.

there is no time limit on the later.

It sounds to me like you have system files missing and repairing the registry will not replace missing or corrupt system files. I suggest reinstalling Windows use an emergency boot disk. Boot to a command prompt with CDROM support insert your Windows CD and at the A: prompt type D:\settup (D: being your CDROM drive with the Windows CD in it) this should replace any system files that are missing. BTW do you have any idea what caused this could it have been a virus win.com seems to be a file that viruses attack often because Windows will not load without it.

Boot to a command prompt with CDROM support insert your Windows CD and at the A: prompt type D:\settup

It's setup with one "t". The command settup will return a "Bad command or filename" error message.

Folks PLEASE re-read your posts and check spelling when suggesting DOS commands. Spelling errors will only leave a person sitting there wondering what to do next.

Dek

My most humble apology.

The command is scanreg /restore.

You may now whack my fingers with a stick.

Can I do it, can I do it??
Just kidding Ranchdog, http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Dek, here is a link to F-Prot (http://www.fprot.org/fr_english.htm) . You might run it from DOS and see if you have a bug as Rond suggested.
If you are going to do a fresh install, this is pointless, but still nice to have http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif
