i posted this same problem a while ago, and got some responses, but none of the suggestions worked. basically, i boot up with a boot disk an begin to format, but before it actually begins to delete stuff, the computer hangs and says trying to recover allocation unit 237. i increased the stacks= line in the config.sys file from 9,256 to 18,512. but that didnt help.
is it possible that bios settings such as quickboot, SMART for hard disks, floppy drive swap, and reserved memory size could be causing this problem.
i appreciate any help. thanks.

Recovering a lost allocation unit error is not the same as a stack overflow error...this is a sign of a dying hard drive....try running scandisk onthe drive using the option to test the surface (it should be on a 98 bootdisk)...if it hangs or comes up with a lot of bad sectors then the drive is definitely on the way out, if ti just has a couple then it should be able to repair (work around them really) them, but you will noeed to keep an eye on the drive.
