Ok can someone explain to me what im doin wrong:
I have an origo wireless router which is hard wired to 3 pcs around the house they all work fine, but i have tried to add a laptop to the network (wireless lan card) but i keep getting : Media state ..........Media disconected on ipconfig/all. The card in question is an EDIMAX 2.4GHz OFDM 54Mbps Cardbus . Ive installed/reinstalled updated drivers rolled back drivers but still, media disconnected. I am running winxp home on laptop, win2000 pro on this pc win2000 pro on other 3 pcs i also tried a BELKIN 54g cardbus but it still says the same media disconnected!
Am i missing something in winxp do ihave to do anything special to obtain an ip so i can ipconfig? As i keep saying all i get is : MEDIA STATE........MEDIA DISCONNECTED

Welcome Aboard!

If any of the following is technobabble, just post back and we'll simplify things a bit.

How are you connecting the wireless card to the router? you usually have a choice of using XPs built in wireless-config zero or whatever came with your card.
I've found that the microsoft stuff is fine, and it may be worth checking to see what you are using.
Another thing is to check the channels - there's no point in trying to connect to something that isn't there!! see which channel your router is on, and then make sure your cardbus card is on the same one.
Switch off encryption to check for a connection - this is obviously a temporary measure, as every man and his dog could use the wireless connection otherwise, but it is possible that the encryption is causing the problems.
ONe obvious thing is the connection speed - I haven't checked out the specs of your router, but will it accept 11g (54Mbps) connections? if not, then you need to ensure that your cardbus adaptor is set to connect at 11b 11Mbps) - and if there is a difference in speed capability, then you could have problems with the encryption - sometimes the things will just not talk if one card is more advanced than another, even if it purports to support the lower specs as well.

You should also check the router to see if MAC address filtering is on or off, if DHCP is enabled or disabled - you need to check the latter on your cardbus adaptor as well - there's no way you will connect a static addressed router to a dhcp client laptop.
