Hey all, this dates back again to my mom's computer that is still not finished. I started this post around Oct 7, with "I tried to re-loaded windows"....that will give you more of the story. To update...I initially (stupid) tried to re-load windows on top of the OS, it crashed. So, with great help and instruction from this group, I copied a boot up disk from a windows 98 computer to get the drivers (BTW, if you work at Microsoft, he says NO ONE is running windows 95 and he has no clue how to help me) I reloaded windows 95 with the boot disk help. I had to re-format and partition the hard drive. I thought and tried to do it for one, but it is in 2, C and D. So, the systems up in windows now but here's all the problems:
-When booting, I get a message in dos "Sec Slave Drive ATAPI incompatible Press F1 to resume"....I do that and windows is now up.
-In the start button, I now have suspend above the shutdown selection ???
-I have no sound, no volume control on the task bar. I put the audio sound installation floppy in, and it didn't do anything to re-load it.
-I have NO CD-R drive. I can't run anything from the cd. When I initially had windows95 in there to install, I had to search it out and it was F!!! but now, when I try and run f, or e, or d, or whatever, it will not run that cd. I lost the CD-R drive.
-I'm trying to load a free internet juno on there, but can't seem to get that to work either, especially not now since I can't get the CD to be seen.

I go into the control panal and to add/remove...there's only one program listed in there!!! Nothing else.

So, what should I do, as you can tell I'm not a wiz. Should I pay money and bring it to someone to update and get it running like I bought it off the shelf with all the installations and everything on there?
OR should I re-load windows and try to re-partition the drive again....(but where's the CD come into play?)

This is so difficult because she lives 3 hours away, and I can only take about an hour before my allergies kill me in her apartment.
What's the great advice...I need it bad to get this thing over and done with.
Thanks
Christine

-"Sec Slave Drive ATAPI incompatible Press F1 to resume"
Press F8 to get into CMOS setup, select 'Standard CMOS Setup', press Enter, select 'None' for the secondary slave drive, go back to the main menu and select 'Save Changes and Exit'. If this does not work, then your computer's BIOS does not recognize the CD-R drive and you may have to flash the BIOS.
Does the computer also have a CD-ROM drive installed?

-'Suspend' in the Shutdown menu means that the computer can be put into a hibernate mode. But this mode is normally not available for Win 95 systems. Perhaps the system files that were loaded from the Win 98 floppy include this feature.

-For the no sound problem, go to Start/Settings/Multimedia/Audio, select the sound card from the 'Preferred Device'list, click on the volume control button, adjust the volume.
If this does not work, go to Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/Device Manager, click the + by 'Sound, Video, and Game Controllers', is there a red X or yellow ! by the sound card?
If a red X, then double click on the sound card, and make sure the box is checked by 'Enable in all Hardware Profiles' and the box is unchecked for 'Disable in this Hardware Profile'.
If a yellow !, then double click on the sound card, click 'Resources', if there is an IRQ conflict stated in the box at the bottom then change the IRQ for the sound card or the other device.
If there is no conflict, then click on the sound card, click 'Remove', restart the computer, Windows should reload the drivers. If Windows has no drivers for the card, then they have to be installed from the floppy. If you do not have written instructions on how to install the drivers, then insert the floppy, open 'My Computer' on the Desktop, right click on the 'A' drive, click 'Explore', look for a help or readme file which will have instructions on how to load the drivers for the sound card.

-The 1st item in this post may be the reason your CD-R drive cannot be found in Windows. Is it shown in 'My Computer' and 'Device Manager'?

-There will not be many programs in 'Add/Remove Programs' simply because no software has been installed onto the reformatted hard drive.

The 1st item in my previous post should have read 'Press F8 at startup to get into CMOS setup'.

Christine,

Since it is not working....I would suggest that you take it home with you to work on, if you can. Sounds like compounded miseries...Computer/Allergies. One at a time would be enough for most folks! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

The CD-R drive doesn't show in My Computer nor the Device manager. When I was re-installing windows as I said before, it did not automatically run the CD. I had to browse, and then I found it as "F', then it loaded the OS. BUT, then I'm not able to run any CD's as when I try to Run F, no where to be found.
The computer had everything installed before I tried to initially re-load WIN95 in the OS and crash it. So, the CD ROM drive was there.
Should I go back to the drawing board and try to re-load the OS again? In doing so, how could I prevent the computer from re-partitioning the drives to be two and only one, C?
Could some of the problems be that when the system was born , it was running an older version of explorer...and in the 4 years I used it, i of course upgraded that. So, in the re-load of windows, coul dit be "confused" looking for the older version?
I would like to take it back and work on it, but then I'll have to take the whole thing including monitors since it's older and mine does not fit or interchange.
Thanks

1st [F8] will not get you into CMOS, it tells the boot process to post a boot menu, so you can boot into Safe Mode, Command Prompt etc. It's usually [Del], [F1], [F10] that gets into CMOS. Check the first boot screen, often it will have an onscreen message telling you the key to press. Set Secondary Master to Auto Detect.

Open the case and check to see how the CD ROM is hooked up, I don't know of any reason it should be secondary slave unless it has 3 drives...from the error message I'd say it's either seeing a hard drive or the CD ROM is a panasonic interface that must be run on a controller located on the sound card.

Look at the cable, it should be plugged into Secondary IDE on the motherboard, and the long end of the cable plugged into the header there. The shorter end with two connectors should be plugged into the CD ROM and the END plug, not the one in the middle. If it's a single IDE cable with only two plugs either can go in either location.

On back of the CD ROM should be a set of jumpers, marked Master, Slave and Cable Select. Set it on Master. If you have another hard drive on the same cable set it to slave. Shouldn't be one there.

With win95 sometimes the CD ROM has to be installed manually, sometimes it will detect it automatically. Go to Start\Settings\Control Panel\System and click the Device Manager tab. Check to see if a CD ROM is listed, if so, boot into Safe Mode and remove ALL CD ROM drives listed, then reboot and reinstall it. If Windows doesn't detect it, use the Add/Remove Hardware wizard in Control Panel. You might also have to download drivers from the Internet, get the make and model number off the drive and look them up, usually at the manufacturer's site.

See if you can get that far and we'll try to deal with the rest...

I HAVE THE COMPUTER HERE WITH ME!!! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Finally, I have the computer and am going to return on Friday, so I figured I'd try and attempt to get this thing back up completely.

Here's what I've done again....
I tried to re-partition the drive with the instructions given from my post on Oct 11. The problem I have with this is that it creates D: as a RAM drive and then doesn't load a CD-ROM drive.
I tried to follow the directions detailed below at my mothers house, but it didn't do what you say it would do. I tried hitting delete, F1....but as soon as I hit the F1, it resumed...as it says it will do. So again, I still have the problem with "Sec Slave Drive ATAPI Incompatible, Press F1 to resume"

So here is where I'm at and here is what I need help with:

-Re-partitioned the drives....now when I try to use CDROM support to install windows 98, it does not see the drive, does not recognize the CD and aborts installation. It then will only prompt me to A or C drive. I have tried about every letter in the ABC after that, and it doesn't recognize any....so completely CD-ROM is gone no drive showing, how do I get it back. (CD-ROM is connected physically, lights are flashing on the drive) I am completely unable to load windows at this point.

If Windows ever gets loaded back on...this is what exists that I need help with:
-Getting rid of the Press F1 to resume (as stated before, I tried to do this intinally, and nothing happened as stated in the message below)
-Having a Cd-ROM drive available
-Having just One hard drive letter C:
-Having D: as the CD drive
-Load Sound card and drivers
-Load video Card and drivers

I lost all on the task bar, no drivers are enabled for anything.

BTW, I did take it down the road to get fixed by a computer company, but I had left the Win95 authorization document at my mothers(3 hours away)
and the other windows 98 that I was going to put in there is from my company, which has a mass distribution key code and no official registration for me to have.

So, in my attempt to try and get this going by Friday...or I'm going to have to find a place to fix it back there and leave it for a week before I go home again.

Hopefully someone can shed some light on this.....thankx http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
