View Full Version : Unable to Ping!

I have an unusual problem. A friend of mine has 2 desktops and 1 laptop. The 2 desktops have cables into a wireless router. From one desktop I can ping the other desktop without any problems and vice versa. From the desktop, I am unable to ping the laptop. On the laptop, I cannot ping the gateway or anything else. The error message I get is “Error Code 65.” When I do an ipconfig, the ip is 192.168.1.101 and it has the same gateway as the desktops 192.168.1.1. The laptop CAN access the Internet. What I ultimately want to do is share some folders and printers. Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Is the wireless router set to stop ICMP? if so, you won't be able to ping.
The two PCs that are wired ae using a switch. The switch will allow pings, but this doesn't necessarily mean that anything outside the LAN (the switch) can be reached.
this would be my first port of call - check to see if the wireless access on the router will accept or reject ICMP (pings)

Deddard,
Will check that ICMP in the router and respond back here. Thanks for responding.

Im cornfuzed, can you not share files either? If you cannot connect to other network shares you may have more problems than just ICMP being blocked. If your router is blocking ICMP, it doesn't necessarily mean that you cannot share files either.

CAUSE
This behavior occurs because the following conditions are true:
* The Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) feature is enabled.
* Firewall software from Zone Labs, is installed on the computer. ZoneAlarm and ZoneAlarmPro are examples of Zone Labs firewall software.
* The ZoneLabs firewall software is not correctly configured for ICS.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, use one of the following methods that is appropriate to your situation:
* Configure ZoneAlarm for ICS support. Please see the program documentation or see the Zone Labs Web site for more information about how to configure ZoneAlarm for ICS.
* Remove the Zone Labs firewall software from the computer. Please see the program documentation or contact Zone Labs at the ZoneLabs Web site for more information about how to do this.

Who is your ISP? Do you have broadband?
First if you have XP, make sure the firewall is off.
Next, if you have another firewall make sure it is configured to allow network traffic.
Variable is right, this appears to be more than blocking ICMP. This appears to be a congiguartion issue.
Oh' and one more little thing. Do they have the same workgroup name?

hie Variable, a friend of mine faced similar problems, he uninstalled ZA and problem was solved.
And hey, i am not assuming anything, its Mr.Gates who is behind all this :D . I found the solution on Microsoft's site. (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q316414)

Hello rahulkothari:
I think what Variable is trying to point out is. It is a little silly to tell someone to uninstall or reconfigure Zone Alarm without first asking if he has Zone Alarm installed. The best bet when someone who is asking for help gives you incomplete information, is to ask questions first and then provide solutions based on their responses....

ohh, you are right. I should have asked him first...
Apologies.
