This is a weird problem, if anyone has come across this even a clue would help.
This is an emachine- an Athlon XP with Windows XP Home. That's all I can find out.. can't disable startup splash screen, BIOS holds no pertinent info.
The option is selected to click on a username to logon. There is no password, but after a username is clicked, it runs for a minute or two before popping up "A problem is preventing Windows from accurately checking the license for this computer." After I click "OK", it runs for another minute or two on that logon screen before complaining about low virtual memory and that it has increased the virtual memory size. Then it just freezes there on that screen.
I've searched high and low for a fix, but they all involve booting into safe mode or safe mode with command prompt, neither of which I can do.. it gives the same results. The best fix I found (for safe mode)oriented on virus removal. I've also tried last known working configuration, just for fun.
My next step is to see if I can't boot from a floppy with some AV and/or spyware software and check the HD, but I'm not optimistic.
Any pointers would help. Thanks.
