It could be something very technical, i know a solution, because i ran into the same problem you did. If its in start/settings/control panel/system, and your cdrom shows up. Click on your cd rom and click advance settings and uncheck dma, if uncheck, check it. Then restart and see if your cdrom works. If it doesnt ill show you a link to try to fix it.

If you took the cdrom out your self. Take it out and look on the back of the drive at the pins and see if any are bent or broken or pushed in. Also check the motherboard connections to see if the same is true. If everything looks ok try this. http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q189/5/26.ASP?LN=EN-US&SD=gn&FR=0&qry=cdrom%20&rnk=4&src=DHCS_MSPSS_gn_SRCH&SPR=W98

I have used the CD drive for installing the Windows so Im sure there is no bad connections or something. I'll try your link and see if it helps. Thanks again pal

You might want to try DEVICE MANAGER and REMOVE all CD-ROM devices...reboot and let Windows locate and reinstall the drivers.
Oops, you will want to remove in SAFEMODE (usually F8 at startup) and then reboot.

I also tried that before but it didn't help. Im having 2 cd drive one is ATAPI and other one is Creative CD writer. I just fixed the normal CDROM which I beleived having a floppy disk intaller, it didn't work. Im thinking of using the second one which is Creative having a CD installer and driver. Do you think it will work. as far as I know this CD is having Nero burning program which I normally use for writing. Pls help I wanted to run the machine as normal like before.
Guys Any help pls. all the instruction above have been follow but no luck
Guys Im back with the same problem. Regarding the last time I don't know how suddenly it got detected my CDROM by windows. Now same problem again I just build a new PC and installed the Windows ME using cd drive but when I check again in windows explorer I can't find the cd drive. The main problem is I can't installed my video card drivers. Is this common problem in Windows ME
Can somebody pls. help me
Is the drive set to auto-detect in the BIOS setup?

Also check for boot virus' on hard drive and boot disk... http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

The last solution you try is always the one that works ........
One thing to note:
When you install Windows from scratch you MUST remove any un-necessary drives and cards from your computer. If you don't you can end up with a crappy install. For instance, when I tried to install windows on my old computer with two hard drives and two CD-ROM drives I could not get the windows installer to find a hard drive to install to... When I disconnected all the extra drives I was unable to get Windows to reconize my video card untill I removed all my extra PCI and ISA cards.

I think my problem become worse. I tried to swap my old HD to my new machine who's not recognizing mY CDROM. It works fine I can able to see the CDROM using the old HD having WIN ME. So i decided to put another new 40GB DH and installed the the WIN ME. installation was ok. But same problem the CD ROM not detected by newly intalled win ME. Here comes the problem then. I fixed all mY HD in the single machine (who'is having a problem) Primary IDE 2drive both 40GB (master/slave) then Secondary master is CD ROM and slave is 4.3 HD (with win ME also). My question is..???? IS it harmfull to have 2 harddisk having bootable win ME at the same time. Anyway it didn't boot at all I got an error of C:/windows/system error
I can't remeber exactly what was the exact wordingS. But it says that files got corrupted. Another question is. Do I need to re format my old HD afte getting this problem... PLEASE HELP ITS REALLY COZ ME A LOT OF CONFUSIONS HERE

Hi Roel,
Wow, sounds like you have a real mess. In answer to your question about having two harddrives with an operating system on them, No, it doesn't hurt because the system will always look to the C:\ (Primary Master) drive to boot from.
Since you have corrupted files, it may be best to reformat and reinstall an OS.
I would take all but the Master (C:\) drive out. Make sure the jumper is set correctly. With newer harddrives, you will probably have to remove any jumper on the back. Read the directions on the harddrive. Save the jumper because you will need it later. Install operating system to that harddrive.
Next, add the other harddrive to the primary IDE channel and set the jumper as slave. Find that jumper that you took off the Master Primary harddrive, put it back on the harddrive, making sure to set it to Master. Boot up and go into BIOS setup. Make sure all IDE devices are set to Auto. Save and Exit. Continue booting and see if Windows sees the drive. Note: The drive will have to be partitioned and formatted in order for Windows to see it. If the drive has data on it, then it has already been partitioned and formatted. Don't do it again unless you want to wipe all data off the drive.
After you have successfully added those two harddrives to the primary IDE channel, add the other components one at a time, making sure after each installation, that Windows can see the component. Make sure you have the jumpers set correctly for whatever you're doing.
Here's another thought. After you have installed Windows, the next thing you need to do is load the motherboard drivers, which may or may not include IDE drivers. Also, if still having problems, you may need to try the Add New Hardware option in Control Panel.
Good luck.

dear roel,
i have this problem myself last month. I tried to install win xp to my harddisk. I format my harddisk confidently to NTFS using partition magic 7.0. When i tried to install win xp, it didn't boot. So i used my friend computer sys. to install the win xp. (made my harddisk as a secondary drive) My sys. is AMD 1110 thunderbird while my friend is Pentium III 850 (not the same mobo and drive sys.)easily i can install win xp to my harddisk(as secondary drive).the problem is it cannot install as master to my sys. So i reformat my harddisk to 32 and then i copy my friend sys. from his harddisk(my friend as master and mine as secondary)from his sys. using norton ghost. It take just a few minute. when i install my harddisk as master to my com. sys. it manage to reboot. The problem is all the driver i copy from my friend sys. is not the same as mine. His cdrom is not the same brand as mine, also the graphic card is not the same. Just imagine!.(curiosity kill the cat!)I didn't make any backup or have all the driver in cd. So, I made a decision that i must make my sys. recognize my modem so i can connect to the internet.(my modem is not the same as my friend).I bought the modem drive an manage to connect to the internet. (luckily my cdrom drive was in my friend sys.) From there, i manage to download all my driver and manage to run my sys. as before the problem happened.(it took me nearly 2 weeks to solve this problem)Now i happily used my old OS, win ME rather than upgrading to win xp. Until today i still don't know why my sys. cannot install win xp. as i posted before, if you have internet connection, try to find your cdrom drive from the wed. (try www.drive.com)or (http://www.drive.com)or) look for your cdrom brand in the web.I can assure you this will solve your problem. Good luck.
I think that's the problem I might have a boot virus.. Can someone tell me how to eliminate this Im not having any anti virus in my machine? is the boot virust different from any normal virus?? is it harmful. Coz I remeber once I boot the machine using bootup disk and I got a message that Im having a virus on my MBR. Pls hel me how to remove this

some cd drives are automatically detected and they have there drivers installed automaticallyby windows.
i had the same problem when i changed my old cd-rom drive to a new one. i was ver puzzled in that i could not see it in My Computer. so i started messing around with the system.
in the end what i did was went into BIOS at startup and reset everything to default then when i logged on and went into my computer there it was sitting there.
hope this helps
