Unable to open programs in WinXP Home

Hi,
I am working on a system where in XP Home when you double click to try to open a program, it does not open. I've tried to right click to open and it doesn't respond. Also I ran the anti-virus software to scan for viruses and nothing comes up. I also tried to install adaware but I can't install it because of the program opening issue. Does anybody have any idea what can be causing this? I am trying to avoid a re-format and install XP Home. Any help or suggestions would be helpful.

I'm wondering if you can load and run AdAware from SAFEMODE?

Also, you might want to install and run Spybot Search & Destroy...

Also, you might want to download HiJackThis and post your log here as per the instructions with the download...be sure to save in a "folder" (name it HiJackThis) to the C: don't save onto your desktop or temp

I had those three in mind. There are other user accounts that allow me to open programs. Can I run adaware, spybot & hijackthis from the other accounts and it will scan the HD completely and not be user specific? I'll give that a shot and see what happens.

I would try Safe Mode and log into the Administrator account. Several viruses will cause the kind of problem you describe, and I think MS Blaster will too. Try opening Windows Explorer and search for msblast.exe. If it's not there, try to run the antivirus from safe mode, or an online scan. House Call (http://www.housecall.antivirus.com) should be the right link, if not check around the forums, Budfred has links in his signature, so does mjc and I think Whyzman might.

EDIT: And yes, Adaware will run in Safe Mode, I 've had to do it several times. Hijack This will too. I haven't tried Spybot in Safe Mode but it should work too.

There are four users setup for this system. They all are administrators. I am having the issues with one account that will not open programs. I am running an online from one of the other user accounts.

Two things I notice Diz...

One: You want to save HJT to a permanent folder...best on the C:
Right now you have it on the Desktop which would put the backups all over your desktop...

Two: I realize the log is long, but please post the complete log...you pulled the header off and there is information contained there that the troubleshooters need to have a look at also...

I don't do these for a living :rolleyes:, but a quick glance at the log and I can see you definitely have some "baddies" there...

Hang on and one of the folks familiar with cleaning the crud out will be by to give you a hand...

I decided to make a new user with admin rights and save all documents,music, etc. Working well now. Thanks for your help fellas. I deleted the trouble account. It didn't have many files to save. Scan with adaware, spybot, etc. got all the spyware off, ran windows updates and update antivrius software. All is well.
