Hi There,

When I do a control-alt-delete to see what programs are running, I get the following list. Can anyone tell me what these are, and which ones I need? How do I keep the ones I don't need or want from getting automatically started on startup? Is there something somewhere I can edit or something?

Here is the list I get when I do contol-alt-delete:

Explorer - I know about this one
P2p networking
Realplay - I know about this one
Qbdagent2001
Mrtmngr
Dw
Rundll32
Osa
Qttask
Systray - I know about this one

This is an old system that is running really slow so any help you could give would be appreciated... Thanks!

You can use the programs below to check the entries....for example, Mrtmngr is from Quicken and does not need to load at startup.
Qttask is from Apples Quicktime.
(You can use the search feature to find the entries)

After you've identified the list, type: Start/ Run/ msconfig (Enter).
Then go to the "Startup" tab and uncheck the entries to prevent them from loading at startup.
Be very careful you don't disable a necessary entry.

*Note also that some entries can be prevented from loading at Startup from the options settings within the Programs themselves. (The Quicken entry is one example I believe). This is an old system that is running really slow so any help you could give would be appreciated... Thanks! Of course, the usual maintenance such as defragging, dumping all unnecessary temp files etc. will help too, but the biggest help of all would be to get hold of some old Ram if you could....32mb is very little, especially when running several programs.

And of course, don't forget Anti-virus protection, the latest security updates, and run scans for "Crapware". (Adaware and Spybot Search and Destroy are two very good programs).

If you post a HijackThis log, we can help you figure out what is running and remove the stuff that slows you down... Since you have this: P2p networking, there is an excellent chance that your system is infested and needs to be cleaned out...

To run HJT, extract it to a permanent folder such as one you create like C:\HJT. Close all programs you have opened and make sure that all programs are enabled if you use msconfig. Run it and Scan, then Save the log. When the log window appears, Right click to Copy it, open your browser and come here to Paste the log. Do not make any changes until it is checked since most items are either benign or essential to the computer.
