View Full Version : Unable to boot XP

Good Morning:

Well, I've done it this time. My system dual-boots: Linux and Windows XP.

Last night I was resizing some partitions with PartitionMagic 7.0 and now when I try to boot into XP I get the error message "autocheck program not found - skipping autochk."

After the error message the system reboots. I've tried the Windows Recovery Console with no success. I do not want to run FIXBOOT or FIXMBR in fear that it will corrupt everything and I will have no system at all. Currently I can boot to Linux.

I sure would appreciate some help on this one!

I recognize that same error message cuz it happened to me once. You'd need to do a repair/install. If that doesn't do it, you'll have to re-format and reinstall from scratch. Hopefully you've got back ups.:)

Partitionmagic is great by itself, but I've learned to uninstall it as soon as it's done it's job. I haven't multibooted with Linux, but have with XP, 98 2k etc using partitionmagic - had to reformat a couple of times, even if I used bootmagic.
I'm not sure if it's XP or partitionmagic that falls over it's own feet, but the above post is spot on.
If possible, use the partition magic disk as a recovery disk- it should contain recovery procedures that can be done from booting.

Couple of ideas HERE (http://www.debianhelp.org/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=2729) but if the boot processes have been corrupted with lilo etc, then running a repair installation may not help.

Thanks Gentleman!

I will give your ideas a try later this evening.
