Contemplating a major career change. I'm moving to Japan in the fall to take a consultant position at a University. Will have too much spare time for my liking, so I am seriously considering "moonlighting" in IT. Have a headstart already, being fluent in Japanese/Chinese.

Have just written my NET+ and finished my A+ a few months back. Will be writing for MCSE in early August and RHCE in September. Not too worried about MCSE at the moment, but anyone here ever write for their RHCE? Any advice or good materials to recommend?

Have 5 machines I've been playing with here (RH/Mandrake/Gentoo/Slack/Debian, Win3.1/98/Me/2K/XP), hardware wise I'm set. I'm really worried about the RHCE, and hope I haven't bitten off more than I can chew.

From someone who has no idea what you're talking about...well, except for the move to Japan...I think that you're set! No worries!

lol Whyzman. Thanks for the vote of confidence.:)

This is all just paper cerification, but papers and testing are very important in this part of the world, and highly valued.

MCSE- Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer

RHCE- RedHat Certified Engineer, there is also RHCT- RedHat Certified Technician.

RedHat is used extensively here. Very popular.

Probably because they are one of the few that offer support contracts. Very appealing to businesses.

I have only heard about the RHCE, but it is supposed to be quite tough very little of that multiple choice business. Unfortunately the only materials I've seen reccomended have been for Linux+ or the LPI.
