Hi,
I am having a problem with a Win XP Home PC in my Win NT Server 4 network.
First, when joining the domain, I could not join the existing ABC domain, and thus had to make do with joining ABC 'workgroup'.
Only then it could see my ABC network and my network drives, as well as see other computers in the ABC domain. Only thing is that whenever I log on to the network with this PC, there is no option to join my ABC domain. At the logon window, the available fields are only for "Username" and "Password".
Now, this Win XP Home PC needs to connect to a printer that is shared out by one of the other PCs in the ABC domain. This particular printer is currently used by all the other users in the domain, most of whom are Win 98 and Win XP Pro machines.
Before I can access the printer, I need to connect to the PC sharing it, right?
So I go to Network Places, look through the list of PCs in the network, then double-click the PC that is hosting the printer. At this point I get an error message saying something like "unable to connect to the machine....insufficient permission. Pls check with network admin..."
But I am the administrator for ABC domain!
I find this strange because on other PCs I can double click on any PC in the Network Places and see all their shared items.
On the server I checked the security settings for the PC sharing the printer but right-click > Properties shows only a "General" tab with nowhere to set any permissions or security settings.
So now, my questions.
1) Is there any workaround to enable Win XP Home to log on to a Win NT Server 4 domain (and not workgroup)? Can the "Domain" field be seen in the log on window while logging on?
2) How can I connect to the particular printer in question?
Advise?
