Hi Maxcat,

I hope your girlfriend is planning on getting rid of Kazaa. Using it is just asking for problems and the following fix includes it's removal. It has been documented that as much as 50% of the files traded there are infected. I use and recommend WinMX. A much safer choice.

Download and run KazaaBegone (http://www.spychecker.com/program/kazaagone.html)

Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs and uninstall Gator if it is there.

Then reboot and have HJT fix any of the following that remain:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://wfix.com/searchbar.html

Then boot into safe mode and find and delete any of these that you find:

Tvm.exe
P2P Networking.exe
Points Manager.exe
Kazaa.exe

Then reboot and post a followup log, just to make sure everything is gone.

(Don't mind me Maxcat...a little inside joke. But very true none the less!) :D

Please include the header information when you post back..... It contains information crucial to making sure we are doing the correct fixes...

OMG!!! This computer is so FUBAR. I did as advised, or at least I tried to. I was finally able to download KazaaBeGone. It was tough because the mess of spyware on this PC prevented me from getting to Merijn's site. I ran it and thought it got Kazaa out. I went to look for the specific exe's listed by Steve and I was not able to delete them all. What's more is that I ran HJT and checked the boxes to fix and rebooted only to find that they are almost all still there. Namely these ones:

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {707E6F76-9FFB-4920-A976-EA101271BC25} - (no file)
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {5D60FF48-95BE-4956-B4C6-6BB168A70310}_ - (no file)
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {A045DC85-FC44-45be-8A50-E4F9C62C9A84}_ - (no file)

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497}_ - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [TV Media] C:\Program Files\TV Media\Tvm.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [TV Media] C:\Program Files\TV Media\Tvm.exe

I ran HJT twice more with reboots and those are still there. I'm so frustrated and this machine is so infested I think we're just going to blow out the HD and reinstall the OS to start clean... without Kazaa! (I have come to despise it too.) I was checking the config of ZoneAlarms and saw many, many, many programs that were trying to access the Web, including Gator, tipb.exe, tvm.exe, rza1.exe, save.exe, bargains.exe, SaveNow.exe, Pink Panther.exe, and tons more with names that are just letters.

I really think that it's not worth it to try to repair this toxic spyware dump. What data can be backed up will be but then we will scorch the earth so to speak. Am I crazy or is this the best course of action? Thanks for the help.

The TV-Media items can probably be fixed in Safe Mode... Run HJT from there and try to fix them... While still in Safe Mode look in Add/Remove Programs to see if you can uninstall it there... If not, then find and delete the folder...

The R3s will take a Regedit, but that is actually quite simple... As I said before, we need to see the ENTIRE log including the header to know what way to go with the final cleanup, but it should be quite possible to clean it up without having to nuke it....

Please reboot into normal mode and run HJT again with no other windows or browsers open, then post the ENTIRE log here... Also, it looks like you are probably running version 1.97.7 and you need to download version 1.98 to get the most accurate scan...

You should be able to get the new version of HJT here:

http://www.subratam.org/?page=removal

Your log looks almost clean... I strongly recommend you get rid of this pest though... it will promptly reinfest your system if it remains:

O4 - Global Startup: LimeWire 4.0.4.lnk = C:\Program Files\LimeWire\LimeWire 4.0.4\LimeWire.exe

You will also need to remove it in Add/Remove Programs or delete the folder it that doesn't work...

To clear up those R3s follow these instructions:

Download Registrar Lite from here:
http://www.resplendence.com/download/reglite.exe

Put it in its own folder. You may want to keep this program. It is an excellent free, registry editor.

Copy and paste the follow text into the address bar, then hit 'Go':
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\URLSearchHooks

In the pane on the right are the values associated with that key.
We want to remove these ->{5D60FF48-95BE-4956-B4C6-6BB168A70310}_
{A045DC85-FC44-45be-8A50-E4F9C62C9A84}_
{0428FFC7-1931-45b7-95CB-3CBB919777E1}_
{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497}_ Notice the underscore at the end, They should be the first ones.

Right click on it, and select delete.
If you get a confirmation question, respond OK then close out the program. Then reboot and post a fresh log....

It looks like this is the only thing left that needs to be fixed:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

It would be a good idea to fix this simply because it is a resource hog and isn't needed.... Removing it will make it take slightly longer to load MS Office, but it will also make your system run faster the rest of the time....

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE

Assuming that you aren't having any other problems, here is my prevention speech... If you are still having a problem, please post back with details.....

This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. You need an antivirus that is updated, a good firewall (a router firewall is not enough) and a spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads. All of these have good free versions available... be very cautious about any security software that advertises in popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually useless, but also often have malware in them....

Check out this article for more ideas:

Thanks a million Budfred. You have come to the rescue again. I just installed Spywareblaster. I hope this solves the problem.
