View Full Version : Network Cards down (both of them), no Internet access

Hi Guys,

Alright, here's my situation:
last night, thunder and lightning all over the place. I lost power for maybe 1/2 second. Just enough to reset my computer anyway. I turn the computer back on, and no internet!!!
The other computer - the one I'm using to cry for help - wouldn't go on either, but is now fine (hopefully  ), but mine still won't connect.

I have 2 Network Cards, one integrated with the motherboard, and the other is a Dlink. I was using the motherboard one when the power surge happened and the other on was disabled.
I uninstall them both from the Device Manager, and scan for new hardware, they come back up wihtout any problems.

I cannot renew my IP address... and I keep getting one of those 169 ones. I get an error saying "an operation was attempted on something that is not a socket" when I renew.
I've unplug my computer and the modem maybe a million times, turn everything back on. That didn't work!

I'm no network expert and I've done everything I could think could help, but I'm running out of ideas and I'm turning to you guys! I need that computer for my work... So I can go without checking my e-mails and stuff for the next 2-3 days, but I need it back online by Tuesday.

Please help... :(

Thanks in advance

Hi Lau
Am I correct in assuming you have a Router or similar setup since you happened to mention "network"?
ie., are both Computers hooked up at the same time?
If so, and there are no error messages concerning your network cards in device manager, I would take the Router (Hub, Switch) out of the loop and hook up the Computer in question directly to the Modem and try automatically detecting settings again in you Connections configuration.(BTW...I'm assuming this a Broadband modem?)

The reason I ask is that I've had one or two ports go bad from lightning in a Router before, so switching ports or removing it from the setup may help to narrow down the problem.
Lightning can create some very bizzare problems, so even cables and just about anything else can be suspect after a storm.

If none of this applies to your situation, sorry and have a nice day. ;)

jabarnutcase.. lol.. funny name btw!

I didn't mention it earlier, but I did bypass the switch and plug directly the modem into my network card... that didn't do it!
I'm getting the same error when releasing/renewing, and internet is still down...

Thanks for the input though!

Hmmm- Sounds like your trying everything I would.
So I assume you've also tried your original configuration with one or the other cards disabled rather than both of them installed?

I suppose anything is possible, including both Network cards biting the Bullet.
BTW- I'm up here in NH and I saw on the news some of you guys down there got some Golf Ball size hail!

Maybe try a different network card...seems unlikely both got fried, but anything is possible.
Sorry, not much help here. Still thinking. If I come up with anything else, I'll be back. In the mean time, others will most likely be along.
Good luck!

(Edit) One more thing: I did bypass the switch and plug directly the modem into my network card... that didn't do it! Did you try rebooting the Modem after you by-passed the Switch and attempt to renew?
And if it's a Cable Modem, besides rebooting it, actually romoving the Coax from the Modem and plugging it back in may do the trick too.

I tried rebooting after and before and in-between...
I think soemthing got fired inside my computer but not the network cards.. although the rest of the computer works perfectly fine, so that's probably not it.

I will try to get my DLink into the other computer to see if it works, and let you know how that went.

I didn't get the hail here, but we got pretty bad thunder/lightning! That was pretty scary

Alright... well, I got an update: IT'S FIXED!!!! and I have to thank macellarius, who encountered the exact same problem I did about 2 months ago and gave the URL to the Windows help (yes, yes, Windows actually helped resolve that problem):
right here (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;817571&Product=winxp)

piouf... that's a nice wieght off my shoulders :-)
