a friend of mine has a problem burning out ethernet cards we think due to lighting strikes during thunder storms. He has sattelite internet and has a box that sits on the roof of his house and it is connected to his pc through ethernet cable. We are kind of confused on this since he doesn't have a surge protector that the pc plugs into and the only thing that gets burned out is the ethernet card not the motherboard etc..I was wondering if it is possible for lighting to travel down the ethernet cable and destroy his pci card?If it is so do they sell a surge protector to plug between the
ethernet cable and the pci card?Or does he need to unplug the cable everytime there is a storm? thanks
You can buy an ethernet surge protector
If this system has burnt out a number of cards then it is well worth the $70.00 price to install one.
Here is Just one example

Yeah. I had a surge that burned out my LAN switch and a PCI LAN card.
Here's a surge protector for ethernet equipment that's not too expensive:

Not really, I know how many times I have seen lightning take out only a modem...and 4 or 5 times the same storm took out modem, cardless phone, answering machine...sounds reasonable to me that lightning could also just as easily damage only a NIC card.
