I detected some virus on my MBR is it harmfull to give this command in dos mode FDISK /MBR

Does it format my whole drive and lossing all my datas? I don't have any antivirus tools in my computer right now. Is there any sites that will give me a free antivirus that can suit in any floppy drive.

Just to add I got 2HD both connected to promised card in Primary IDE. 4.3 GB is the master while the 40GB is slave. THe machine boot on 4.3 having win ME as an OS.

FDISK will wipe away all the data on your hard drive, dont do that, did it tell you too? that is probably the main part of the virus if it did. Look around at some of the other recent posts in this forum, you will find some good links to anti-virus sites, but get one of them as soon as you can. There are sure a lot of viruses going around right now, would hate to see you lose it all. I have Norton antivirus, it's about 40.00 here in the states.

I figured u should get a quick response before you decide to do FDISK. DON'T do that, it will erase everything.

All that Fdisk /mbr does is restore a second copy of the Master Boot Record
that is saved in the boot area of the drive.

Yes this command does solve some virus problems.
It does NOT harm the data on your drive

Thanks Rick
I really appreciate your help, one thing I want to make sure for executing this.
First I'll boot the machine in to dos mode ising bootup disk created from WIN ME. tthen from A:> I'll change it is C:> and I'll type FDISK /MBR

is that right???

and after this what would be my next step. Can I just boot the machine like a normal boot up.

Roel......

Download the Ant-Virus program that is posted above. It is a very good one. And it is free. It is also very user friendly and easy to set up.

AVG will scan your entire HDD for you including MBR and Memory. There also is an option that will scan your MBR every time you boot up. There is an option to scan floppies, etc. This program will definitely scan your e-mail for you also.

Run this program, let it find your virus, and it will give you options concerning what to do with it.

P.S. There is a Custom Scan option that will scan additional HDD's.

Luck.

Thanks for the details. What you think shall do first. Download the antivirus above or run FDISK /MBR

At the moment I can use my PC to internet but I can't use my CR DRIVE. Im affraid if I run FDISK /MBR it will crash my system. Then its the end I can't access the net again!!!!

Roel

Please download the AV program and allow it to
take care of any virus problem you have first.

If this program is slow to download do not be alarmed.
It is happening to all of us. The problem is on
their end. Also, if it times out while downloading start
over again andd it will pick up where it left off.

Then we will help you take care of hardware
problems.

is that right???

No, run fdisk /mbr from the A:\> prompt. Might work from the C:\> prompt, but you want it to run from the floppy only, since a virus is present. If you access C: drive at all you run the chance of the virus activating itself, thus defeating your purpose. DO NOT even switch to C: drive, use the floppy ONLY. That way you know the virus cannot activate, since it has to be run from C: drive, and you'll only be using A:.

And make sure you turn the computer off for at least a couple of minutes first to eliminate any chance it can store itself in memory and still cause problems.

The antivirus suggested above is a very good idea too.

Roel...

The file is fairly large. When you get to the website
select the Free version download and it will tell you
the MB size.

Another thought, here is a link that will scan your PC
for you and look for a virus, If it finds anything it
will identify the virus and and give you the option of
what to do with it.

http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

Then later you can download the AVG program.

Luck.

Thanks for the tips here tha lates status, My new machine is running ok now after I scanned it and cleaned using AVG software. BUt my old machine which I used for downloading the AVG was also infected by the same virus (NYB) or something I cannned it using the link you gave me (housecall) but its sayung that the virus Im having is uncleanable. So I scanned it using AVG it got clared but When I scanned it again using Emergency AVG disk via dos mode it was detected that the virus is still there. It looks like I manage to remove the virus via dos mode. But when I boot up the windows didn't work. It is saying non system disk!!!!

Roel....

Don't give up hope. Now we're starting to get somewhere.
Now you have an AV program to help you.

The NYB virus affects the MBR and it is a memory resident
type Stealth virus. Please do not use any of your
floppy disks unless they are first scanned by AVG. Infected
floppies are how this virus is placed back into your PC.

Here is a link that will give you some information:
http://vil.nai.com/vil/virusSummary.asp?virus_k=880

The disk error message is caused by this NYB virus. IMHO
at this point I would do the fdisk /mbr in DOS (A:\ prompt)
This proccess will happen so fast you'll swear the system
didn't make any changes. Just power down and re-boot.

BTW. Saw an update... There are 58,000 known virii. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif

Please re-read posts made by Rick and Pete[/].

Pete and Ranchdog

I managed to cleaned all the floppy. I do beleived that the virus still resding in my C:> (drive) Master Boot Record. I just want to clarify this If I give this command to my C drive C:>FDISK /MBR

Will it clean the virus?? will it boot my machine to normal since I has already a WIN ME installed...

ranchdog

Boot-up and tap the F8 key while doing so. With the up and down arrow keys select Command Prompt Only. This will give you C:\. Type A:\ at that C:\ prompt. Enter.

Now you should have an A:\ prompt. Type in fdisk_/mbr. The _ being a space. Enter.

Shut down power. Re-boot.

Now you should be good to go with a new Master Boot Record.

Browse thru all of the options in AVG. There will be an option for scanning the mbr every time you boot up your PC.
