View Full Version : Who makes proprietary computers?

I always hear "Proprietary Computers Suck!" I know that Gateway make proprietary computers from experience. I practicaly have a new Gateway computer by replacing the bad stuff...even a monitor.

Who makes the Proprietaries?

Most of the big computer companies make Proprietary computers. IBM is probably #1, Compaq #2, Gateway, Dell, most of the others follow.

I thought Dell was top of the line and had great service to boot. Should I quit thinking? If I were given a free top model Gateway, I would sell it without even opening the box.

I am looking to buy a new computer. Not sure if I am knowlegable enough yet to build my own.

As far as I know, Dell is not proprietary. And yes, they are top of the line, easily upgraded and have fairly decent tech support. Can't go wrong with a Dell, is my way of thinking. In fact, if I weren't so into the IBUILTIT brand, I would buy a Dell.

IBM, Compaq, and HP are the most Proprietary. Dell and Gateway are also somewhat proprietary but you can work around it. With Dell and Gateway it is mostly software. with IBM, Compaq, and HP it is hardware and software. If I were given An IBM, Compaq, or HP I would keep it and use it. (wouldn't buy one) Dell or Gateway on the otherhand I might even buy one if the price is right http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif (I am thinking of buying a Dell)

IBM, Compaq, HP, Sony and eMachines are mostly propriestary (and depending on the model any one of them can lead th pack on proprietary components). Dell, Gateway, Alienware and a bunch of others are not very proprietary...some even less than others (if you want to count custom paint jobs then I guess Alienware is a little proprietary... http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif ). The least proprietary manufacturers are probably those that offer the most truly custom-built rigs.....
