My computer won't boot. When I turn it on, the BIOS beeps continuous slow beeps. If I clear the CMOS, then it will boot. When I go into the BIOS setup and change my processor speed to use a 133Mhz FSB, it goes back to beeping. If I set it to 1400 Mhz with 100 Mhz FSB, it comes up as running at 1050 Mhz with 100 Mhz FSB. If I change it to 1400 with a 133 FSB, then it starts beeping again on reboot. Here's a list of my system:

Abit KG7 Mother board
AMD Athalon 1.4 266FSB
Crucial DDR RAM 256 MB (1 DIMM)
PNY GForce 2 MX 400
IBM Deskstar 40GB HD

I have replaced the memory, processor and video card. I've tried a new BIOS chip, but not a motherboard. I'm starting to think it's a motherboard problem. The hard drive is clean with only a fresh install of WIN98 that I just put on (running at 1050Mhz).

Does anybody know if there is a setting or something that I'm missing on my Motherboard? I've checked it all a thousand times, but I could be missing something. I can control the memory voltage from the BIOS, would this be a problem when speeding it up? (I haven't changed the voltage from it's default).

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

PS - The system worked fine for about two months, then all of a sudden started with this.

What speed RAM are you using...if you are trying to run at 133MHz with PC100 RAM you'll have problems...

Does your motherboard have a jumper to select the FSB or is it solely a "soft setting -i.e. done in BIOS?

Go to Abit's web site. Once there, check around for POST codes. Most likely in the troubleshooting section. The beeps actually mean something. If all else fails, you can call them on the phone too. I have done this myself. You may feel like an idiot making beeps into the telephone, but it can be fixed. Otherwise, someone is unhappy. That means the computer is beeping because it cannot display any information with the current settings. So my advice is contact tech support. If you don't want to, stop changing the settings to what makes the computer freeze.

I hope this helps. I am now going to post my own question and hope for answers. I just thought I should give back first.

This reminds me of the old HEE HAW show from the 60's. The patient walks into the doctor's office and swings his arm "Doc it hurts when I do this" and the Doc says "Well stop doing that"

Replace the cmos battery.....you shouldn't be losing settings that way. Even NEW MOBO's have bad batteries in 'em.
