View Full Version : Rewriting The PC Guide

As many of you know, while The PC Guide is a very useful resource, it is also one that is rapidly aging. Most of the material dates from the late 1990s, and I have not updated any part of it for a very long time. In fact, the last CPU mentioned on the site is the Pentium II, which is rather ancient at this point.

This was due to a number of factors, including the difficulty of keeping up with changing technology, other writing projects, and a reduction in revenues that caused me to devote my efforts in other directions. I have always regretted the need to stop updating the material, as my intention had always been for The PC Guide to remain current and relevant.

I have done some soul-searching of late, and I feel like I need to get back to my "roots" and rework The PC Guide. Even though I have a lot of other networking material I also want to publish, I am beginning the process of getting back "into" PC hardware, updating my technical knowledge, and composing a plan for a complete rewrite of The PC Guide.

This will of course be a large undertaking. I do not anticipate any tangible results from this effort until next spring. But I did want to tell you all that The PC Guide is now being moved back to the front burner.

Also, I have decided to learn from past mistakes and not try to create a single, monolithic Guide to be published all at once. I will be putting together an overall PC Guide document plan, and then putting the new Guide online one section at a time. It will be structured using the same overall format as The TCP/IP Guide.

Comments welcomed.

You had asked before if anyone would be interested in writing some articles for it and, at the time, I didn't really see myself as qualified in any area enough to be helpful... Since then I have developed some expertise in the area of online security and could probably write something on the basics if you would like... Let me know if that is still something you are considering...

There are lots of people on here with more know-how and expertise than little young me but id like to help, in a small way, if only making drinks for the workers.

The PCGuide is where I started. I'd love to see a current version.

Thanks for the replies, folks.

Budfred -- you know, I totally spaced -- forgot entirely about that project to have user articles put on the site. That's a different project and one I do want to do. I will get that in gear toute-de-suite.

Your site was recommended to me as one as having some depth of knowledge and understanding of problems associated with Microsoft Windows (all versions). I must say having seen your Forum on this subject I have not been disappointed. Where did I hear of your site? Look here (http://www.adslguide.org.uk), then go to the 'Message Boards'. (to be continued because of message length)

What attracts me about the AdslGuide site is that like yours, it covers such a wide range of subjects see again in the 'Message Boards'. Another item I liked was the fact that each section one visited, it was an 'internal' site that all came under the umbrella of www.adslguide.org.uk. I say that because having registered for your forum, I was lost to exactly where it was so I could have access to it again, it was a case "I know it's there but where". Don't missunderstand me, I am not saying Adslguide is beter, but it just easier to navigate around.
