hello, i have been trying to install windows 98 se on my friends pc, with no luck. the problem that is at hand is this: i am tring to format the hard drive (8 gig) and during the format, i reach 2 percent, and then it says it is trying to recover allocation unit so and so. after a few minutes, it tells me that the formatting has failed, and prompts me to retry. i am wondering if the hard drive is screwed or if i am doing something wrong, but i have done OS installs for some time, and this problem is new. any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance, illuminaP.

Grab the hard drive manufacturers diagnostic utility and run that. It should give you an idea if the drive is headed south.

What are you trying to format with?

now i feel really stupid...i swaped the hard drive with another and voila! i didnt see it, but he had 2 hard drives on the machine, one of them turns out to be the one that was supposed to be with it in the first place, which still has the OS on it and all of the old info. but i will get that utility to check the other one too. thanks for the reply bro, later dude.
