Switch - no router
I would like to be able to connect two different computers to the Internet through a cable modem without a router but never have them connected at the same time.
Is there a switch I can purchase that I could connect the two computers to and install it before the modem?
Just about any hub would work for you.
a simple two 4 port switched or non-switched like this one

Rick,
Using cable with both computers plugged into the switch, wouldn't they both be on the net if both computers were turned on.
This is for an accountant friend who wants both computers on using a KVM switch but does not want her business computer to be on the net all the time. Only when she's uploading tax info.
That's is why I thought about some kind of A-B switch. If there is such a thing.
Security is her concern.

I'd agree with Juniper and Rick on this one.
If you are looking to have both computers hooked up to the modem at all times, but only one connected the internet, you could do as Rick says and get a switch or a hub.
...OR you could disable the network card on computer you wish to have offline (also with both computers connected to the modem with some sort of Y-cable, if such a thing exists).
And if neither of those solutions work for your acquantance, she could physically unplug Computer A from modem each time and plug Computer B in to the modem. All methods just as effective as the other, but some take a little more manual labor each time. As far as a switch with a physical A-B switch, I'm afraid I've never seen one (which does not necessarily mean they don't exist). Most of the switching is done through how you set up your switch's settings.

On the "why dont you just right click on the network card icon and click dissable?".
Does disabling the NIC card on one computer still allow the other computer. I assume it does but I've learned not to ass-u-me.

Your assumption is correct. If you disable the network card from one computer, you will still be able to connect with the other computer.

Since I'm giving someone else advice, would you saa that the "disabled" NIC would be 100% secure?

I don't think anything that has to do with computers anymore can be called 100% secure, but disabling the NIC can be considered the same thing as disconnecting the ethernet cable from the modem. No NIC--no incoming or outgoing network traffic. Pretty safe.

I guess. I can create a shortcut so it wouldn't be that big of a hassle.
Thanks.

Anyone know how to disable the NIC in Win98 or Me?
In device manager
Hilight the nic.
double click it.
The properties .
Then disable
Another option for you.
if the person wants to have one system online all the time.
and still be able to network the two without having internet access to one.
Install two nic's in one system. ( the one with web access)
Connect one nic to the share hub and the other to the internet modem
One nic Internet.. the other intranet
