I installed a new motherboard with a new processor (ECS Mainboard K7S5A with Duron 900mhz processor) and new ram 256K in my old computer. The hard drive has Windows ME on it and worked fine before the mobo replacement. Now when I try to boot, I can get into bios and I get a start up screen that gives me a DOS prompt. When I try to reinstall windows ME I get an error message SU0013 which says if I have HPFS or Windows NT file system I must create a DOS boot partition. I don't know what HPFS is but I know I do not have Windows NT file system. Any ideas?

It sounds like something got confused along the way, and it may be me....ok so you are trying to reinstall WinME after you switched motherboards...

Did you use fdisk and remove the existing partitions on the hard drive?

Did you create a new partition?

Have you formatted the drive?

To do all of that you need a bootdisk...boot to the disk and when you are at the prompt type in fdisk and remove the current partitions, reboot, fdisk again and then create a new partition(s), reboot and then format c: at the prompt, reboot, this time setting the cdrom as the first boot device and putting the WinME CD in the drive, that should get you going...

thanks for response, I thought this message did not post because I got an error message when i submitted.

Any way, I did not partition or use fdisk initially. I did try to start up several times, and after switching the boot drive order a few times got to where I am now. Is it possible that partitions were created by dos on one of the many attempts to get a full boot up to windows?

I noticed when the system is starting up now it says I have virtual drive D . I don't know what this is.

Just follow mjc's advice and you'll be fine. A virtual drive is just a temporary drive that dos creates so it has somewhere to work.

Just to be sure before I do this, will these steps cause me to lose any of the data on my hard drive?

Yes, the format will cause you to loose all the data....it will wipe the drive clean for a fresh start....

thanks for the help! I followed your instructions and am now up and running. Next time I will not believe it when I'm told I can upgrade anything without losing anything on my hard drive.
