I'm amazed that this problem still exists without a decent fix.

I just decided to try ME (as I haven't used it before) so decided to use a spare hdd. but to save a big set up job I copied the 'C' partition over with w98se on it (which ran fine) then setup ME over the top as an update, which went well. or seemed so until I tried to access the internet. immediately upon conection I got the message

'microsoft internet explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. we are sorry for the inconvenience'

I understood from previous case that this was nothing to do with M$ but now seemingly it is. but I have just done a search and the problem seems to be still current and unresolved.
I did find a workaround by editing the registry but it didn't work.

only other thing that I find is that zone alarm wont work, and reports
'error please reboot system'

I am currently zero filling the other hdd at the moment and will put the original hdd back. (I am on another pc at the moment) by I intend to try it again as I get a bit sick of w98 habit of crashing regulary.

It is much easier to have less grief with ME by:
1) Doing a clean install.
2) Sticking with 98SE or XP.

Upgrading to ME with anything other than a perfect 98 installation only makes it so you cannot fix the 98 flaw and ME won't work either.

I agree that a clean install is the optimum solution, but it takes me months to get the system to my liking with all the progs etc.

I thought that I had a perfect install of w98se.

I have now collected several hdd's of various sizes, on a couple of small ones I copied over the 'C' drive partition containing a fresh, clean install of w98se & progs. so that should there be a problem I can copy it back, with all my preferences intact, in a short period of time. I have checked them and they work fine, only thing that I have to do is to import pst files & fav's.

this means that in a crisis I can just switch hdd & carry on, then at my leisure, copy the partition back.

it was one of these that I used for ME, but rather than do a clean install (just for experimentation) I first copied one of my backups to a prepared hdd then upgraded the 98 to ME

apart from the 2 probs everything appeared as it should be. which is a lot less hassle than doing a clean install.

however, I have now wiped the hdd, so I might do a clean install anyway, and try it with just IE to see how it goes.
I still wonder why there is no fix for the problem though.

Of couse the optimum solution is to get 98SE or other OS to your liking and then image the HDD with Acronis TrueImage or PowerQuest DriveImage and burn to CD-ROM.
If you ever have a problem, the image files will put the computer back to your optimum setting and you can go on quickly from there.

that was nice timing. my toshiba laptop (bought of ebay) has just arrived but there is no restore CD with it, so I could do with burning one (sooner rather than later)
I have drive image, (I think it's 1) started to look at it, but never got around to using it, maybe nows the time.
