Strange Startup

When I start up with Windows XP I have had some strange things happening. I believe this might be related to my internet connection. First I get a message "Realtime I/O does not work. Please check the services Applet windows control panel." I have no idea what that means.

Each time I start up, if I try to open my MSN connection, it won't. Yet my MSN Explorer connection will. (I have two connections, one using the MSN browser and the other not using it- both to the same provider.)

Then, if I try to open up "Connect to" in the start up, I will see nothing and the computer will freeze. I have to shut it off to restart it.

Now to make things even more confusing, if I wait about 5 minutes after starting up, all things seem to be back to normal.
Does anyone have any idea what I need to do to diagnose this problem? Since I am new to Windows (former Mac user), I am lost.

I have run Norton Utilities but can't seem to correct this problem.

Hmmm...I wonder if this can be caused by the auto-update feature. you can try turning that off and see if it helps.....

I just noticed that the update, which is usually on the task bar (right?) is not there this morning, and when I started, I had no problems. I wonder if when I was fooling around with some of the diagnostic tools that I somehow disabled it. Where is the auto update control?

Since I am not running XP I'm not really sure where the control is (one of the ohters might, though)...but if it stays gone after a few reboots, I'd say, yes, you stumbled on it and turned it off......

THIS IS REALLY FRUSTRATING the server is messed up again

ok we will try this again.

got to services and right click the auto update>> left click on properties>> under "Start up type change it to MANUAL>> click apply, then OK.

I am not sure that is the problem though.

note: if you go to where Gallaeglagh sent you, you may find this blanked out and then you will need to go where I pointed you.

one final edit: personally I disabled msn explorer and just use IE.

there may be a conflict I/O (input /output) with XP not knowing which of your connections taking precedence.

you may need to choose one or the other.

I do believe something is wrong, because I keep getting double emails when someone in this forum responds to me.

well, you probably got as many emails as duplicate posts that just ocurred when the server for this site was having problems.


for instance, you may find (5) emails saying that I replied because of above duplicate posts.
