View Full Version : How fast of a processor will my system take?

I am trying to upgrade my HP Pavilion 6465 - which currently runs a 433Mhz Celeron. It runs with an Intel 440ZX/100 Chipset (100 bus, instead of 66). I do not know the manufacturer of the motherboard, but it is the one that came with the computer.
I am trying to put in a 850Mhz Celeron (and heatsink and fan that came with the 850Mhz Celeron). When I turned on the computer, I found it to be powered on, but not booting up. Nothing appeared on the monitor, and I checked to make sure ALL devices were connected snug.
Do I have "too fast" a processor for this motherboard? If so, how fast will it take? If not, why won't it work? Do i need to reset some jumpers? If so, which ones?
The part that freaks me out is that I tried "reinstalling" my old 433 Celeron, and the same thing happened. Have I confused the motherboard?
I've added SDRAM, a 32MB Video card, and a new modem before, and NOTHING like this has ever happened. Please help me... if you can.

Yoda, thank you very much for your assistance. I took a look at the page for which you provided the link, and I had been to that HP page before.
My questions from it are: Who makes the Condor motherboard pictured there, and why do they only provide the jumper settings for VGA settings & Real Time clock?
New question: a friend told me to try "resetting the CMOS?" does this make any sense? if so, how do i do that, too?
Thanks again, Rich

Greetings , pretty sure thats a Intel OEM board.
From what I see you do need to clear the CMOS, I believe the jumper next to the battery is the one. If ya look close there's a jumper for
the bus speed. Anyhoo , WELCOME!! And Let us know your luck.

In some cases you need to upgrade the BIOS to use a faster cpu, for instance, my own system is a Dell PII 266, and the fastest cpu I can install without a BIOS flash is a PII 300. If I wanted to put in the PII 333 (which is still a 66Mhz FSB cpu) I would need to flash the BIOS. When my BIOS was made there was no 333 PII. That may be the case with the Celeron 850, and your PC's BIOS. Also, just a question as I do not know much about Celeron's, isn't the 433 Mhz a 66 Mhz FSB cpu? I think they only recently went to a 100 Mhz FSB for the Celeron, but to be honest I really do not know for sure.

Basically with HP (except for boards that came with Coppermine processors) you a limited in how far you can upgrade, HP boards are not the same as the retail or other OEM versions of the same board...the tend to certain features disabled in BIOS and they can't re-enabled, and the failure rate with installing a non-HP BIOS is very high. If you installed a Coppermine Celeron you may have cooked the voltage regulators and now the board is toast...if resetting the BIOS won't work (look for JP1 or pull the battery) then in all likelyhood it is toast. The HP boards just don't have the ability to give the required voltage (the chips support it, the settings are not in the BIOS to set it up and of course there are NO jumpers to do it)

Two quick and probably StUPID questions:
1.) What should I use to reset the CMOS button?
2.) How would I try to "flash" the BIOS?

Well - indeed the motherboard is FRIED!!
Thanks for all the help, and I think I will ask someone to help install my new motherboard when it arrives.

OKAY! So, I got a new motherboard, and it and the 850 Celeron are installed & SEEM to be READY to work great!
If it isn't one thing it's another!
I HAD upgraded to Win XP from Win98 before all this happened.
When I put in the new motherboard, made all the connections, I got a message "NTLDR is missing"... I fixed that, except my system acted as if i had no win.com file, and when i tried extracting it, it would automatically shut down upon reboot.
So, I decided to do a whole reinstall of Win 98, with the intention of upgrading to Win XP again, but I now get the message "The COMCTL32.DLL file cannot start." I've been to the MS website, tried what they recommended to solve the problem, but nothing seems to work.... does ANYONE have any idea how i can fix this problem??? again - HELP!!
