Old Compaq 575Deskpro,75MHz CPU. Trying to add more memory to the 16 MB that's installed now. But no way will the sys accept more memory without stoping computer from booting. I get the message about vxd files and reload windows. System will run fine with the 16 MB installed. At boot system will count additional memory then I get the screen to accept the new settings all this seems to work OK but when starting win sys stops and reports the vxd problem. I cant get into the BIOS by hitting the F10 key or by removing the battery/hdd cable ets. Just reports that sys settings have changed and if I want to accept. Does this sys need a {setup disk}??? I have been to Compaq web site but couldent find any info.
Thanks

The VxD that is generating the error message can be any VxD--either a default installed VxD or a third-party .386 driver being loaded from the System.ini file. If you do not know which driver is causing the error message, create a Bootlog.txt file and check to see which driver was the last driver initialized. This is typically the driver causing the problem.
I think?

Also if the memory is not compatable with the system it can cause these kind of errors...did you match the specs of the old memory to the new?

triplej, adding to what mjc said here is a match for compatable memory if that is the problem. http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.asp?Mfr%2BProductline=Compaq%2BDeskpro&model=Deskpro+575&x=7&y=11

Thanks to all for response,I also suspected the memory type so I ordered two 16 MB simms still same thing. And what about this? If I try loading OS with additional memory above 16 MB I get a message about himem.sys not being the right verison or corrupted ?????? of course this stops me dead. I remove memory back down to 16 MB and everything is ok. As long as I stay at 16 MB sys works even if I use four 4MB sticks of memory/ two 8MB ets. memory always counts up at boot to right amount.Go figure ???
Thanks

Man that's crazy, that machine should take 192MB. Wow, so it works fine even if you use 4 4MB sticks? Guess we can't blame the SIMM slots. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif
The bad news is this is getting to be out of my scope of knowledge. The good news is, if mjc can't help there are others that can Ghost_Hacker to name but one. Sorry I couldn't be more help but I will keep looking for info. Good luck!

Hmmm....now that is strange....so if you fill all four slots with 4MB sticks it still works?
OK, how about this, with the 16MB in everything works just fine and you can get into BIOS setup? What are your memory related options?
Do you have the original disks that came with it? Yes, it might need a setup disk...Here (http://www.compaq.com/support/files/deskpro/us/locate/3_36.html) are all of Compaq's downloads for this machine....
