The computer is a Pentium III 633 with 128 megs of RAM and Windows 98 SE.
The problem is it will not boot up. The fan turns ,the m/b light(red) comes on, a green light appears on the M/B when the power is turned on and the CDrom lights up. That's it. There is no beeps,a blank screen on the monitor
no lights on the keyboard, no HD light and no light on the power button. Another thing, the power switch will only turn the computer on, but will not shut it down, even if the switch is pressed in for a while. I have to unplug the computer to shut the power off.
Thanks for any advice that I will get.
Is this a newly built machine?
Had is previously worked?
If so, have you added any new hardware lately?
Any power outages in your area?
Try removing all the add-in cards except the video card, and try booting with just the video, CPU and RAM (yes, even remove the drives)...you should be able to get through the POST and then get into BIOS. After that if successful try adding one card in at a time and repeat. Also, find the CLear CMOS jumper (if you board has one) and use it to clear the CMOS or remove the battery...the manual for you motherboard should have how to do that, if you don't have one you can try at the manufacturer's website.

Thanks mjc for replying. The computer is 2 yrs old and has worked just fine. No there was nothing new added to it. It is just that when the computer was started for the day it went kaput. I shall try the things you have told me to. thanks.
