I use Windows98se.

I have just succeeded in getting my two hard disks to appear in the listing of control panel> System> device manager, and also the cdrom, and was happilhy working with my computer now.

Then yesterday morning when I booted up the computer with Windows98se, and I did not do anything ornery with the computer the previous sessions, everything also was working smoothly, what did I come across on the screen? but the notice that:

[MTASK] This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists... .

So I just properly step by step turned off the computer and turned it on with a reboot. And the notice did not come back.

Now, my query: What did I do or didn't do to deserve that kind of a warning? Or what kind of gasto-intestinal trouble did the computer have in order to suffer that kind of an illegal operation by MTASK.

The message you posted was incomplete.
Missing or corrupt dlls will cause these, we need the complete message to give us clues. Please write down the whole message and post back if you get it again. (it will)

Also, are you certain that the affected file was MTASK?

That looks as if it may be a malware file of some sort, as the usual tas manager file is mStask!

It would be an idea to perform a spyware check with AdAware and or Spybot.

If the problem recurs after that, download Hijack this, and post a log here.

My mistake, sorry. It's not MTASK but MsTASK.

I used laboriously from intuition the Paint Program with the print key of the keyboard to piece together into a bmp file the notice graphic of MsTASK's illegal operation, showing the notice without details and showing the notice with all the details.

But I could not copy and paste the graphic on the post I was writing to start the thread; so I just kept to the first lines incomplete of the notice.

Can people here tell me how to do pasting of graphics in a post I am writing, please? in man-in-the street English?

I thought I would put it as an avatar; but then learned that I am not qualified yet for not having attained the number of posts sent, i.e., 1024. (There is supposed to be a list of avatars to choose from, but in my screen there is no list and no link.)

So I found this attachment feature and used it. Hope if you open the attached file -- and it is transmitted also, you will know what kind of notice and the details I got. I edited it into a tiff file to bring down the bytes

After that rebooting, the notice has not appeared again -- so far. And none so far at this very moment.

Thanks for your replies, and I like to know more about what or who is monitoring to detect 'illegal operations' and to yank out or to disable the program.

If it or he is that smart, why doesn't the party just reverse the procedure leading to the illegal operation to prevent the operation from taking place, or remove the trouble from the illegal operation?

PS See attachment, mstask.tiff.

PS2 I give up, tiff files can't be attached. I will just send it by email to you two if possible. Else I will find some OCR to change it to text file...

Just write down the text of the message and write it in a post. Or take a digital pic of the screen and make certain it makes the file size limit for this site.
The suggestion by David Eaton to scan with Spybot S&D or AdAware is good, it cannot hurt and might help fix the problem. Just update the program, close the browser and scan, fix whatever it finds.

Here is how to post images on the site: http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=24544.
