I still find this hard to believe that
half the country is now on broadband

Actually, it's not so much half the country, as it is half of the internet-using population.
That beeing said: broadband sure is nice :D
I always had it myself, but we used to have narrowband at work. Major pain in the *** for sure!

If by broadband they mean: DSL, cable, satellite combined... then I think it's understandable...

I think what they meant is anything over dial-up [56k]

Yea, its nice, but they are still trying to put too many people on too few lines. I experience huge performance drops 60% of the time. Greedy cable companys are too tight to add the appropriate number of lines to feed thier customers.

I'll give up my dial-up modem when they pry it from my cold, dead fingers.

I am now trying to move past plain old broadband as my little city within Miami is talking about fiber for all and 15mb downloads and 1mb up.
This little place is almost all highrise and only 10 years old.
One of the few places in Fla that all the electrical wires are underground [hurricanes].
they are talking the next 2 years.
Life is good :p :p :p

I am currently on static DSL, about 320K/sec download & 128K/sec uplink.
The cable TV people just ran fiber all over the neighborhood, promises 1MB/sec downloads.
SBC says they are going to go fiber, as high as 13MB/sec download in next 4 years.
Life is good.

I have Road Runnner broadband which gives me up to 3MB/sec download. I forget what the up is. I consistently get 2.6MB/sec down and 345KB/sec upload when I do bandwidth tests. They finished laying fiber throughout the area a little over a year ago. :D
They just added a premium package that will give you up to 6MB/sec download and over 700KB/sec upload. Far more than I need at this point in time. Especially for $85. a month.
But I still can't wait to see what will be next. I'm sure I will need it sooner or later. :p :D

The speeds will only be needed for large downloads [movies, games etc] real time stuff.
As far as day to day surfing none of us with broadband are using our downloads speeds now.
I have been in Korea where it seems everyone has very high speed broadband and they use it mainly to gamble online with. Very interesting.

The Telcos are laying fiber with the FCC (OKed just today) approval for not sharing the new fiber with competitors. They are moving toward "streaming video" support, but I don't know how the content is going to be produced/paid for.

I know I couldn't download half of what I get without broadband. :D
Also very good for the online gaming, nore 3 second ping times like when I was on dial-up.

Totally correct Pave,
What i meant is the really high speeds that are coming with fiber.
the day of anywhere, anytime instantly will be with us sooner than most people thought just 5 years ago.
Very cool stuff.

I would like too ask a question, recently they have selected so many houses here in Nova Scotia to try Internet services through the Hydro Power System Lines. I said I might accept and have several days to make the decision, would there be any possibility of damaging my PC's? I ask this due to the fact that the ones whom accept have to sign a waiver of non-responsibility held against Nova Scotia Power??

There are some problems but more with interference than anything else.
Lots of articles on this topic.
