When I shut down or restart, it takes over 3 minutes to execute. Anyone have any ideas.
Thanks,
Dave

I turned off some of the Services in XP on mine using blackviper's (http://www.blackviper.com) Services Configuration tables. It is amazing how fast XP runs when slimmed down compared with the bloated defaults.
My Toshiba P4 notebook with Xp shuts down in 45 seconds, after the tweaks and a couple of tweaks Shanmuga had me perform using Hijack This logs.

This registry tweak can really improve the shut down:
Start to the Run dialog box, type in Regedit, click OK, then in the Registry go from HKLM to System to Current Control Set to Control, double click and the item "Wait to Kill Service Timeout" you change by right clicking and selecting "modify", then change the value. I think the default was 2000 but I have mine at 200.

That's an interesting one to try out Quantax. Usually at some point in time WinXP's (and Win2K's) shutdown slows down for no very obvious reaon that I have ever been able to find. I have always just reimaged - but a fix would be nice.

I've tried setting the registry to 200 but it had no effect. Thanks anyway.

Well, if you haven't done so already, check for spyware via Ad Aware and Spybot S & D using the latest versions of both(the former is now an SE version and the latter is 1.3). And if you still have problems afterwards, download HiJack This(again newest version which is 1.98)and post the log here.

Are you using an nVidia graphics card? If so, check your startup entries or your services for an entry for nVidia driver service, either NVSvc.exe or NVSvc32.exe. Disable it. It has been knon to cause delayed shutdowns and consume memory. Not needed at all for proper functionality of your card.

It would help to know what is starting with Windows that might delay the startup/shutdown process.
Download HijackThis (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html) and extract HijackThis.exe to a convenient, permanent folder, C:\HJT or C:\Program Files\HJT for example. Close all windows and click open HijackThis.exe.
Click Scan, when the scan is complete the scan button will change to Save log. Click Save log, save it as a text file and copy and paste the contents here in your reply.
Also include the log of startup list in your reply, open HijackThis > Config > Misc Tools > place a check mark beside 'List also minor sections (full) > Generate startup list log > ok.
Have a nice birthday.:)

Thank you all for your suggestions. My problem has gone away and i believe it was resolved when i uninstalled Norton Internet Security which had expired.
Thanks,
Dave
