My sister wants to transfer data from her laptop to PC. So can i directly plug in the phone cable in the respective modems... and transfer data using some program.. like Hyperterminal ? Please note, i do not want to use the phone line, i want to connect both modems DIRECTLY. I googled and found quite contradictory answers, some say its simply not possible.. others say this..
It's done all the time. You connect a phone cable between the line jacks of each modem. Then you open a terminal program in each system set up to port speed of 115200, 8 bits, No Parity, 1 stop bit and hardware flow control. In system A, you send the modem ATX3D. In System B, you send the modem ATA and teh modems will handshake and set up a connection.

You can then transfer files using the transfer protocols available to both terminal programs.

I want to transfer data using the above method only as both machines do NOT have an Ethernet card / USB port / Cd-Rw / Null Modem cable, and both run Windows98. So, if its possible through Hyperterminal or any other software, can someone please explain me how to configure each of the machines ?

I came across this some time back and put it in my favourites
http://www.jagshouse.com/modem.html

I thought it was interesting, and who knows, might come in useful one day. ;)

It's surprising how easy it was to find using my system for storing:

e.g.
PC
__How To
____Connect PC's
______Using
________Modems
__________Connecting two PC's Using their modems, without a telephone line

Thanks for the link Sylvander, but i did come across this one while googling and i guess, it requires one to fiddle with hardware.

Is there any other way ?

and hey, i liked your system of managing links :)
