Thanks :)

I've sent an email to my son suggesting his band [http://www.redbeesociety.co.uk/] might consider making some of their music available there.

They are about to play their 1st live gig in London on 8th September, with more planned. :D

They were mentioned yesterday, Wed 25th Aug, in an article in "The Scotsman" that was quoting a "Time" magazine article that said that Glasgow was the "Hidden capital of Rock" with an "Embarrasment of [musical] Riches".
It mentioned 5 new Glasgow bands set to take over the mantle of the greats and "Red Bee Society" is one of those.

While his link may indeed be interesting to some people, I have a problem where someones very first post is asking us to join another Forum.

Maybe I'm being too sensitive?
My thought is this.
The PC Guide is a Computer help forum. True, many of us post links to other places, but we are also here to help and be helped first and foremost.

Perhaps if we got to know bobob a little better, I would react differently.
My guess is that he won't stick around....that the same link will be in forums all over the place.
Just my opinion of course. Maybe I'm wrong.
I personally don't feel like it's the best way to enter a new Forum.

(Edit) For example...your link. If we didn't know you as well as we do, it sure would look like advertising to us. ;)

Whether he sticks around or not, he has brought some information that seems potentially useful and posted it in the correct section of the forum.

I've been given a lot of useful websites in this forum that I've put in my favourites and this might well be one of them.

I hate intrusion as much [and probably more than] the next guy, but this I rate as legitimate.

People here might want to post stuff there. :D

I paid a visit to their forum and downloaded a short humerous film that turned out to be quite good. :D

So it isn't just a waste of time.

The "Women Drivers" mpeg here http://tinyurl.com/6zfpo was quite good.
Now Ka.mpeg really had me laughing.

Even the PC Guide had to have a beginning. :)

And probably needed some help in the early days.;)

I don't rate this as particularly legitimate. Doesn't matter if some may find the site useful. Joining a forum simply to post a link (on your first post) to plug a website is considered spam no matter how you look at it. Doesn't matter if anything is being sold or not.

Also, this post has very little to do wih "news, events and happenings in the PC industry and the world of technology'.

Glad you found it useful Sylvander and that films about arm bones were enjoyable, but I personally don't appreciate "thanking" somebody for spamming the forums and disappearing.

I'm sure Charles didn't join forums and post a single thread promoting the PC Guide when he first started.

I'm sure bobob is a nice guy, but it seems to me this forum has always frowned upon drive-by link dropping to promote another site. The title itself is provocative enough that it smells like the intent to spam was there.

Thanks for the report and the comments, guys.

It's likely that this person is only here to self-promote his site. That said, at least it IS just another forum and not someone who wants to sell pills that improve your sex life while giving you a discount on printer ink or whatever. ;)

My normal policy is that if someone who runs a relevant forum contacts me and asks, I allow them to post a message about it once. He didn't do this, but I'll let it stay for now as long as I don't see any more threads started about it.

By-the way, here's the article on "the "secret capital" of pop music" [Glasgow] and Red Bee Society:

Unfortunately, I don't see "bobob" around anymore Sylvander.
I will keep my fingers crossed for you though....perhaps he'll come back and share your enthusiasm.
(Perhaps not) :p

ok....I'm sorry guys. Just couldn't resist. :D
(No reply necessary).

Jabar,
If two spammers meet, do they talk like real people or do they just pitch ads at each other?

;)

Good question!
Never really thought about it before, but my guess would be that they just pitch ads at each other. :p

Yeah, but do they swap email addresses?

I looked at this one last night, and decided to email Ixl about it since it was really questionable. On one hand, it could easily be considered spam, being the user's first post, and on the other it's not a "referrer" link, the site is free or more accurately a donation funded one, and at least seems to be legitimate rather than a blatant marketing ploy. I wasn't sure which way to go but was leaning in the same direction as he stated in his post, for the reasons stated above.

Maybe it's borderline spam, and maybe now and then it's worth it to give someone a chance...I guess we'll see...

Hehe...I guess it worked. I just tried to go there and got a "bandwith limit exceeded" message. See, it pays to advertise on the PCG forums. ;)

And the picture fades as bobob, victorious, rides off into the Sunset. Music from the Magnificent Seven plays in the background.

Where will his new quest take him you wonder?

In search of more Bandwidth no doubt. :D

Yeah, but do they swap email addresses?

Their e-mail addresses or ours?

IMHO if I wanted info about music and videos and such, I would go to that type of forum. I am now a regular visitor and poster here because I want or need PC related help, maybe I can offer help, and I learn alot. It's also a good practice for visitors to learn the protocol and behavior expected at any forum before doing just about anything. bobob may have had good intentions, but we all know what they say about good intentions...

Moot point now folks, this guy posted genuine US Grade A spam in his second thread, BOTH are going into the bucket.

When we give you the benefit of the doubt and you slap us in the face, I for one,
DO NOT LIKE IT.

Soon as Ixl checks his email I hope he boots this guy's butt halfway to Mars.
