Over the years I have often read articles recommending the turning off of anti-virus software and firewalls before downloading applications, updates, service packs, etc. to avoid possible corruption of these files.
I daresay such advice would seldom be given of more recent times, even though the same possibilities for corruption still exist.
How likely is file corruption by anti-virus software and firewalls?
With respect to XP SP2 and bearing this in mind, should one wait for the update CD or trust to Windows Update?

Personally (and I'm only running Windows 98SE) I've never had occasion
to turn off either my AVG Antvirus or ZoneAlarm, and I download LOADS of applications!

It has never been recommended to turn off an AV or firewall when DOWNLOADING... it is recommended to turn off the AV when installing some programs... If these are downloaded, it is a good idea to scan them with the AV before opening them, then turn off the AV if they are clean... Make sure you are offline if you turn off either the AV or firewall....
