Hi, Pirate, and welcome to the forums.

Can you give us a little information about your system? Processor speed, amount of memory, and operating system would all be helpful.

When you boot your computer, before you connect to the internet, how many icons do you see in your system tray (bottom right hand part of the taskbar, by the clock)? Also, hit Ctrl-Alt-Del once. How many tasks do you see running? There are lots of programs that like to lurk in the background that can hamper your computer's performance.

Post back and we'll see if we can help you from there.

I would and do keep Nortons System Doctor turned of. It is a hog. Also turn off all utilities exept anti virus. Do as pentachnis said keep your tray and start up to as little as possible. Yes more info would help,O/S, memory, cpu.

One day I will be a pro, Thanks Andy

Something else I thought of - what kind of modem do you have? Specifically, do you know if it is a "winmodem" or a "hardware" modem? If your not sure, can you tell us the brand and model #?

I have a Time computer with a 366 Athlon and 256 RAM I am useing a 3Com US Robotics 56k fax modem I have emptied out my tray almost completly . I Only kept Norton System Doctor running to check on the ammount of processor useage as the PC was running very slow when on line normally it is off . This problem only started a few days ago and everything is fine until I conect to the internet I can run as many programmes as I like and there is no problem but as soon as my modem conects to my servers modem up it goes to 100% pre conection it is running at 5-15%

Ok, if you are hitting 100% CPU usage when you connect to the internet and you have all the background processes shutdown, then I would think it is time to check for hidden processes...run a virus scan, also grab AdAware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/index.html).

Especicially if:

Norton System Doctor creates thousands of useless files in these folders:
C:\WINDOWS\INF and C:\_RESTORE\TEMP
Delete the OEM*.INF files in the C:\WINDOWS\INF directory, and the *.CPY files in the C:_\RESTORE\TEMP folder and see if that helps.
Since these are hidden files, you will have to go to Start/Settings/Folder Options/View and check 'Show All Files' under 'Hidden Files'.

Ad-Aware sounds like a good suggestion based on the symptoms.

Has your ISP ever sent you an installation disc that you've run? Or is the info you needed to set up Dial-Up Networking the only thing you've gotten from them ? (Besides a bill? And poor tech support? And speeds that indicate a need for added servers? OK, I'm getting depressed now... http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif)
