exploer in xp

When I download click open a file via internet explorer download dialog box OR double-click a file in exploer while browsing the local filesystem, it hangs indefinitely. This happends only for MS Word and Excel files.

If I open msword program seperately and then open the file from within inside it, it does open properly.

Any idea why this happens so ?
